Tennessee Football revealed its ‘Volunteer Spirit’ Smokey Grey alternate uniform for the 2025 season on social media on Thursday morning.

The Smokey Grey alternate for the 2025 season pays tribute to Tennessee’s “Volunteer Spirit” — “a reputation of service and sacrifice within the U.S. armed forces, the Vols tweeted on Thursday morning — and has a military theme in the uniform design.

Tennessee will wear the new Smokey Grey alternate during its annual Salute to Service weekend on November 15, when the Vols host New Mexico State for Homecoming at Neyland Stadium.

Vols introduced the ‘Smokey Grey Series’ in 2022

Tennessee in August 2022 announced the Smokey Grey Series, with the Vols bringing back the alternate uniform with a new iteration of the set each season through at least 2025.

The Smokey Grey uniform, introduced in 2013 and remodeled after the switch to Nike in 2015, features a grey helmet with a Smokey Mountains pattern in shades of grey behind the orange Power T and orange helmet stripe.

Last season the Smokey Grey alternate was a tribute to the Volunteer State, featuring the Tri-Star logo on the sleeve and Tennessee across the chest, with an altered helmet stripe that included three stars in a nod to the state flag.

The 2023 version paid homage to former Tennessee quarterback Condredge Holloway with orange around the neck and shoulders of the jersey, a silver facemark with a thinner orange helmet stripe and two orange stripes on the pants, all from the Tennessee uniform worn during the Holloway era. There was also a new white trim around the orange jersey numbers to go with the Smokey Grey pants and helmet.

Tennessee Football uses two alternate uniform sets

The Smokey Grey is one of two alternate uniforms Tennessee Football has used the last two season. In 2021 the Vols introduced the Dark Mode alternate, with black jerseys, black pants and orange jersey numbers and pants stripes.

The initial Dark Mode look featured a white helmet with a black facemask and black outline around the Power T and the helmet stripe. It was changed to an all-black helmet in 2022, with an orange Power T and orange helmet stripe.

Last season Tennessee wore the Smokey Grey alternate in the 69-3 season-opening win over Chattanooga at Neyland Stadium. The Vols wore all orange in the 71-0 win over Kent State and wore the Dark Mode alternate in the 28-18 win over Kentucky in November.
