A closer look at Tennessee's current additions in the NCAA Transfer Portal

Running back Star Thomas

Tennessee Football added its third commitment out of the NCAA Transfer Portal on Sunday, with Duke running back Star Thomas picking to the Vols. Thomas follows the December commitment from Arizona offensive lineman Wendell Poe and the commitment from Alabama wide receiver Amari Jefferson two weeks ago.

Here’s a closer look at the three players that make up Tennessee’s current transfer class:

RB Star Thomas

Graduate Student | Running Back | 6-0, 210 

Star Thomas led Duke in rushing this season, carrying 213 times for 871 yards and seven touchdowns in 12 games. He averaged 4.1 yards per carry, 72.6 yards per game and had a long of 44. 

Thomas spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons at New Mexico, totaling  1,171 yards and nine touchdowns in 28 games. He also caught 34 passes for 351 yards and had five touchdown catches. 

In 15 games as a junior in 2023 he rushed 112 times for 653 yards and four touchdowns and caught 22 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed 107 times for 518 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games in 2022 while also catching 12 passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns. 

Thomas averaged 5.8 yards per carry and 43.5 yards per game in 2023 and 4.8 yards per carry and 39.8 yards per game in 2022.

He started his collegiate career at Coffeyville Community College in 2020 and 2021. He had 970 yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games at Coffeyville in 2021.

OL Wendell Moe

Redshirt Sophomore | Offensive Lineman | 6-3, 330 

Wendell Moe committed to Tennessee on December 18. He appeared in all 13 games on Arizona’s offensive line during the 2023 season, part of an offense that finished 20th in total offense (448.0), eighth in passing offense (308.3) and 18th in scoring offense in the nation (34.6 ppg). 

Moe made three starts and appeared in four games as a freshman at Arizona in 2022. He played at Long Beach Poly High School. Moe was a three-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class.

WR Amari Jefferson

Freshman | Wide Receiver | 6-0, 197 

The 6-foot-2, 197-pound Amari Jefferson, out of Baylor High School in Chattanooga, was a four-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class. He was the No. 204 overall prospect in the country, the No. 34 wide receiver in the class and the No. 6 overall prospect in the state of Tennessee. He was heavily recruited by the Vols before being landed at Alabama a year ago.

Tennessee lost 13 scholarships players during the December NCAA Transfer Portal window: Offensive lineman Vysen Lang (Troy); defensive back Christian Harrison (Cincinnati); tight end Holden Staes (Indiana); wide receiver Nathan Leacock (Purdue); linebacker Kalib Perry (Louisville); wide receiver Squirrel White (Florida State); defensive lineman Jayson Jenkins (Florida State); wide receiver Chas Nimrod (South Florida); running back Cameron Seldon (Virginia Tech); running back Khalifa Keith (Appalachian State); linebacker Jalen Smith (Mississippi State); linebacker Jordan Matthews (Vanderbilt); wide receiver Kaleb Webb (Maryland).
