The Series
Tennessee leads the all-time series against Vanderbilt 79-33-5 dating back to 1892. Of those 33 wins for Vandy, 18 of them came between 1892 and 1926. The Vols hired General Robert Neyland as head coach and athletic director in 1926 in hopes of turning around the rivalry with Vanderbilt. Since 1927 Tennessee has won 77 of 95 games against the Commodores.
From 1983 to 2004, Tennessee won 22 straight in the series and, at the time, it was the second-longest winning streak for one school against another in college football.
The Vols won six straight after the home loss to Vanderbilt in 2005, but dropped five of seven between 2012 and 2018. Tennessee has won the last four games against Vanderbilt — 56-0 last season, 45-21 in 2021, 42-17 in 2020 and 28-10 in 2019 — by an average of 30.8 points per game.
