Transfer DL Josh Schell details commitment to Tennessee

Grand Valley State defensive line transfer Josh Schell thought he would take more visits but after getting back home to Michigan, he couldn’t get Tennessee off his mind. He signed with the Vols on Tuesday and detailed his decision with Volquest.
“Went down there on the visit and the big part for me was meeting the people on the coaching staff and just seeing what they’re about,” Schell said. “I think there’s opportunities to come to make a difference right off the rip and that’s all I’m about so just great people, great facilities, just great. You can’t say bad word about it so I think that’s what made overall decision super super easy honestly, Just come down and compete and get coached by one of the best coaches in the country play the biggest biggest level in the country.”
What he found was a veteran defensive line coach in Rodney Garner, who fell in love with his tape. The chance to get coached by one of the best to ever do it was something he couldn’t pass up.
“Huge,” Schell said. “He’s obviously one of the best coaches in the country. He’s been in the SEC about 36 years now so you can’t say anybody has any more experience so super super grateful to be coached by him.”
On his visit, he got to spend time with Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel, and what he found was someone he could easily talk to.
“I thought he was a super down-to-earth guy like some head coaches can come off as arrogant and like especially when think about a powerhouse school like Tennessee,” Schell said. “Like he is one of the premier coaches in the country and super down-to-earth guy. I like really appreciate him, just he kept it 100%. He’s not gonna bullshit you and that was that was definitely the biggest thing for me.”
At 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds, Schell can play both inside at tackle or even some end if they needed him to.

“I think I can play D-End or D-Tackle,” Schell said. “I think I fit in just fine with everybody here. I’m gonna come in snd compete and they want me have a three tech so that’s where I’m gonna come in and show them that I’m just as capable as everybody in that room.”
He was able to also spend some time with a fellow transfer in Vol Jaxson Moi. He got to hear about what it’s like coming in and adjusting in the room.
“Jackson was great,” Schell said. “He came to eat breakfast with us and was a super good dude and had a good connection I got from the rip. So really good dude. That’s the only one that I really got to talk to but I look to seeing some other guys come forward.”
And what is he most excited about as he heads to the SEC?
“I think every facet of the game like here at Tennessee, you have every opportunity to be great,” Schell said. “You have the nutrition, the strength training, the coaching and just every opportunity to increase every facet in my game so I’m super excited for that opportunity.”
