Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello wasn’t absolute in his answer on who the Vols will start on the mound in the series-finale against Samford on Sunday, but he did give a clear indication on who will throw the baseball first.

“I mean we haven’t told anybody,” Vitello laughed when asked who will start the finale. “I guess we’ll probably start [Brandon] Arvidson, even though he started earlier in the week.”

The southpaw started Tuesday’s midweek 29-4 win over UNC Ashville, throwing the first two innings while allowing three runs. Arvidson struck out four and walked one over 40 pitches. The Junior College transfer saw his first action of the season out of the bullpen last weekend against Hofstra, needing only seven pitches to collect three outs.

“It was fun to see. A little bit of a plan there for him and [Michael] Sharman where we were going to limit their pitch count no matter what. So, it was kind of what they did with it,” Vitello said after his program debut last weekend. “Arv [Arvidson] did a lot with it. We got high expectations for him.

“He was good and we’re kind of building him along. It’s kind of fun. We got some guys that are ready and some guys that are pitching now [that] we’ll build along slow. A couple other guys will be joining the crew here soon too.”

Arvidson committed to Tennessee over the summer from San Jacinto Community College. Working in reverse order, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound hurler signed with Texas this offseason to continue his athletics journey, but was granted release from his National Letter of Intent following the coaching change from David Pierce to Jim Schlossnagle in Austin. In 2023, the lefty redshirted at Texas A&M. He also pitched for the Brazos Valley Bombers of the Texas Collegiate League in the summer of 2023, making eight appearances with one start over 12.2 innings.

Arvidson was one of the best junior college players in 2024, racking up 108 strikeouts over 61 innings pitched. He contributed a 4-3 record across 17 appearances with nine starts and also logged one save along the way. The southpaw owned a 3.84 ERA and 1.43 WHIP.

Originally from Dripping Springs, TX., Arvidson compiled 71 strikeouts with a 1.20 ERA over 45 innings pitched as a senior. The lefty owned a 6-1 record with 62 strikeouts and a 1.76 ERA over 51 innings pitched as a high school junior in 2021.
