Vol Club Confidential: Jakobe Thomas
Growing up in the heart of Tullahoma, Jakobe Thomas is a Tennessee kid. So when he got the opportunity to become a Tennessee Volunteer, it was a no brainer. He joined Vol Club Confidential sponsored by Knoxville Smiles to talk all things Orange including his breakfast with Tim Banks.
“I’m going,” Thomas said recalling his first thoughts when the Vols called. “I told my dad the night of. What originally happened was coach Banks came down to Middle and we went to eat at IHOP and talked ball for 30-45 minutes. He left and I’m like I don’t know if I’m ever going to hear from him again. I was sitting in bed on night and me and my dad were talking about where we were going to go and turn to and my phone starts going off from an 865 number. It’s not coach Banks. It’s coach Heup and we started talking and I’m like there is no question, I’m going and I don’t even have to go visit, I wanted to go here my entire life.”

Thomas may have been racing mentally when he sat in the booth at IHOP with Banks but he vividly took in his surroundings and all the extras.
“I remember what he ordered and everything,” Thomas said. “He got two sunny side eggs and a waffle. And a black coffee. I remember he put three creamers in it. But the first thing we talked about was growing up a Tennessee kid watching Tennessee. We got straight into it and talking ball and how much I knew. He made me go through my entire defense. These guys talk about how NFL guys come in and ask you about the whole defense. I was like oh he wants to know what type of coverages we ran and I drew up all the coverages on his iPad. He was like no I need to know the fronts too so I had to draw that up. Coach Banks doesn’t show a lot so when I showed him he was like ok (shaking head) and not knowing him at the time I didn’t know if it hit too well but it got me here.”
