Tennessee assistant Justin Gainey joined his son Jordan Gainey on Vol Club Confidential sponsored by Knoxville Smiles to discuss their first year together on Rocky Top.
“For me it’s been a learning experience,” Justin Gainey said. “I never coached him before. I never have coached any of my kids. Worked out and spent time on the court. It’s different. It’s unique. I’m learning every day just I would when I used to work out with him. What worked and what didn’t work. It’s been fun and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Just to be able to be around him every day as he goes through this journey.”

And for Jordan, it’s been an experience that he cherishes.
“It’s been pretty cool,” Jordan Gainey said. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience. Not many people get to experience being coached by their dad. I just get to take it in every single day. I treat it like business when we are on the court and when we are at home he is still my dad. We still have those conversations every day after every game or practice on how we are doing and what my thoughts are on what’s going on.”
The demeanor for coach Gainey lets him take it all in stride when it comes to coaching his son.
“I think it helps,” Gainey said. “Inside I’m a rollercoaster. I’m a rollercoaster and I’m up and down. I try to give the perception of being even keel. I’ve always been that way. As a player and as a coach. You never want the players see you get to high or to low. There will be times you show the emotion and express your feelings but for the most part from my coaching experience, the guys benefit from the even keel.”
The Gainey’s and Tennessee travel to South Carolina on Wednesday night.
