Vol Club Confidential: Samara Spencer & Ruby Whitehorn
Tennessee transfers Samara Spencer and Ruby Whitehorn joined Vol Club Confidential sponsored by Knoxville Smiles this week to discuss a variety of topics including the move to Rocky Top.
“Before I went into the portal, I knew coach Gabe Lazo that I have ties with back home was going to Tennessee and he always recruited me wherever I went,” Spencer said. “I knew that would be somewhere that would peak interest. And knowing coach Kim was coming here and seeing her style of play when they went to the NCAA tournament and played Virginia Tech it was kind of a no brainer to at least give Tennessee a look when I was going into the portal.”
Whitehorn have been talking to the previous staff after entering the portal and when there was a coaching change, she thought Tennessee would probably be in the rearview mirror. But then she heard from the new staff and that changed things.
“I feel I really took my time in choosing a school,” Whitehorn said. “I took a very long time coming out of high school choosing a school. I’m just a people person so I got to know who I’m playing for and who I’m playing with. It takes a lot to build trust with the people around me. It just took a minute.”

The Kim Caldwell style is a lot to get used to for any new player.
“I wasn’t looking at the five in five out full court defense aspect,” Spencer said. “I was looking at the offense aspect just because when I was at Arkansas for three years I was an offensive minded person. I knew that trusting in her I knew it would be something I’d be able to develop and get used to. Coming from Arkansas I used to play 40 minutes a game so I wasn’t opposed to playing 20 minutes a game because my body has time to recover faster after.”
