With Tennessee capping an exiting Orange Bowl win over Clemson last week, the 2022 campaign is officially over for the 11-2 Volunteers. So what’s next for the Tennessee football program over the course of the month of January?
The 2024 recruiting cycle is about to heat up with two Junior Days on the docket for the month of January. The transfer portal is active once again for the Vols with three departures this week. There’s also a couple of incoming transfers set to visit Knoxville this week and the days that follow.
Brent Hubbs, Austin Price, Eric Cain and Grant Ramey answer these types of questions and more on this week’s edition of the Volquest Mailbag Podcast.
Three Vols enter transfer portal
As expected, a flurry of Volunteers entered the transfer portal this week following the Orange Bowl victory and bowl season. Wide receiver Walker Merrill and offensive lineman RJ Perry jumped into the portal on Wednesday while offensive lineman William Parker entered on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Vols have added four committs via the transfer portal in the lsat month in BYU linebacker Keenan Pili, UC Davis tight end McCallan Castles, Indiana kicker Charles Campbell and Texas offensive lineman Andrej Karic.
A total of nine Tennessee Vols have entered the portal with others including redshirt freshman tight end Miles Campbell, redshirt sophomore running back Len’Neth Whitehead, freshman running back Justin Williams-Thomas, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jimmy Calloway, freshman defensive lineman Jordan Phillips and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jimmy Holiday.
Williams-Thomas is headed to Stanford while Calloway has signed with Louisville. Jordan Phillips has committed to Maryland.

TE Jacob Warren is back on Rocky Top
Knoxville native Jacob Warren will return for his final year of eligibility at Tennessee. The Farragut alum announced his decision on social media on Wednesday at noon.
Warren has developed into an all-around tight end and paired up nicely with senior Princeton Fant to form one of the top tight end tandems in the SEC in this past season. This past season, he was slowed by injury which haunted some of his preparation but he will still effective.
Warren started and hauled in two receptions for 34 yards in the win over Missouri and he had a season-high three catches for 21 yards at #3 Georgia in early November.
He hauled in a career-long 45-yard catch in UT’s win over #20 Florida back in September that sparked a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter as the Vols took down the Gators 38-33.
