Tennessee football is back to work this week, coming off its first loss of the season in Athens over the weekend. Brent Hubbs, Austin Price, Rob Lewis & Eric Cain discuss the loss and the season outlook moving forward as there’s still plenty to play for if your the Tennessee Volunteers. Check out the Volquest Podcast for the latest on Tennessee football.

What’s at stake for the Vols on Saturday vs. Missouri?

Tennessee is looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season in Athens with plenty of College Football Playoff hopes still alive. The Vols are also looking to secure a perfect season at Neyland Stadium for the first time since 2007. Saturday will be Senior Day for several eligible players who will look to make it nine wins in-a-row at the friendly confines, a steak that dates back to last season and the longest home winning-streak since the run of nine-straight from 2006-2008. Despite the loss to Georgia, Tennessee still leads the nation in total offense (523.7) and passing efficiency (188.61). Tennessee is now second in the nation in scoring offense (45.3) and passing offense (335.8). The Vols lead the SEC in six different offensive categories including scoring offense, total offense, passing offense, completion percentage (71.1), passing efficiency and passing yards per completion (14.96). Tennessee is the only team in the country this season with five or more wins vs. AP Top-25 teams at the time of the meeting.

Tennessee still in hunt for a spot in College Football Playoff

The FPI gives the Vols a 76.0-percent chance to win their remaining three regular-season game and a 62.6-percent chance to make the four-team College Football Playoff field, the third best number behind only Georgia (91.2) and Ohio State (86.6).

Tennessee was the No. 1 team in the College Football Playoff Top 25 on Tuesday, when the selection committee released their first rankings of the season. Ohio State was No. 2 and Georgia was No. 3.

Clemson, which was No. 4 in the CFP Top 25, lost at Notre Dame Saturday night. Alabama’s overtime loss at LSU was its second of the season. The Crimson Tide were No. 6 in the CFP rankings on Tuesday, while LSU was No. 10.

“When you look at the three teams (Tennessee, Ohio State and Georgia),” Boo Coorigan, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee chair, said Tuesday night, “all three very, very good teams that the committee liked, I think the two (Tennessee) wins you’re looking at, with Alabama and at LSU, really sealed the day for Tennessee.”

The Vols won 40-13 at LSU on October 8 and beat Alabama 52-49 at Neyland Stadium a week later.
