Vols put on more steam as Tre Poteat talks Tennessee decision
Defensive back Tre Poteat had a phenomenal time in Knoxville this past weekend. On Tuesday afternoon he ended his recruitment when he committed to Tennessee. Before making if public he sat down to discuss his decision with Volquest.
“Tennessee has always had an important part of my heart,” Poteat said. “Especially after coach Martinez came down and watched me play basketball. That meant a lot because he was coming off an injury. He had just had surgery so that just meant so much to me. Since then they have had the front seat.”
His father Hank Poteat is a former NFL standout, who now coaches college football. Having that resource is invaluable for the younger Poteat.
“It’s definitely helped a lot,” Poteat said. “Just to be there and help me with things. He has taught me a lot of schemes and coverages. We work on a lot of things together. It’s great to put it in full picture.”
Poteat has versatility and could play a number of different roles in the secondary.
“They are going to find a dog and someone who plays the game at 100% all the time,” Poteat said. “Someone who doesn’t give up on plays no matter what.
“I’m able to use my athletic ability and length to disturb defenders. Use my speed against defenders.”
Poteat and his family found they love what Josh Heupel brings as a head coach.
“He doesn’t sugarcoat things,” Poteat said. “The whole staff doesn’t and I like that. My whole family loves coach Heup. He is real direct in what he says.”

He spent a lot of time with Willie Martinez and Tim Banks this past weekend. They have a plan on how to bring out his best.
“Coach Banks along with the other guys on the staff has a great plan for me,” Poteat said. “He can see me playing anywhere in the backend and he can see me using my athletic abilities and just going with it.”
Going into the weekend, he felt like Tennessee was going to be the pick and as that weekend unfolded, he began to recruit for the Vols.
“From the start I could see myself recruiting other dudes,” Poteat said. “Before the visit I’ve been kind of solidifying that this was the spot and I been finding guys and getting the name out.”
