Tennessee baseball has dropped four of its past five weekend series in Southeastern Conference play, the latest to the Auburn Tigers in two games to one fashion in front of the home crowd at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

As a result, Tennessee (37-11, 14-10 SEC) dropped in the national rankings once again.

D1 Baseball, the poll this website follows for rankings, dropped the Vols down three spots from No. 12 to No. 15. Texas, Florida State, LSU, North Carolina and Oregon comprise the top-five while Georgia, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson and Oregon State round out the top-10.

Five of the top-10 teams in the poll hail from the SEC while 10 altogether are inside the top-25.

Baseball America dropped the Vols down six spots from No. 7 to No. 13. Perfect Game did the same, down from No. 11 to No. 17 following the series-loss to Auburn. The USA TODAY Coaches Poll moved Tennessee down from No. 6 to No. 12.

The Vols have eight regular season games remaining. Tennessee plays host to Indiana State in the midweek on Tuesday (6 PM ET) before welcoming in-state foe No. 11 Vanderbilt to Lindsey Nelson Stadium this weekend.

Tony Vitello was ejected on Sunday during series-finale

For the fifth time as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, Tony Vitello was ejected from a ballgame.

This came following a 3-2 check-swing of Eric Guevara at the plate with the bases loaded in the fifth inning during Sunday’s game three against Auburn. It was the second-straight bases-loaded walk of the inning and extended Auburn’s lead at the time to 6-0 in the series-finale.

It’s the first ejection for Vitello in over two years as his most recent ejection came on the road at Missouri on March 19, 2023. It was the fifth of his Tennessee career as he’s also been sent packing early in games against Kentucky (2018), Vanderbilt (2021) and Alabama (2022).
