Tennessee picked up a new commitment on Wednesday when middle Tennessee defensive linemen Zach Groves pulled the trigger for the Vols. He detailed his decision with Volquest before making his announcement.

“Really it was the people that will be surrounding it and all that,” Groves said about what led him to Rocky Top. “I really like the coaches and how they treat me and my family. That means a lot. I really see myself fitting in with all coaches and coach Banks, I like how he can control defense and I really think I’ll fit in there.”

Coach Chop played an important role in recruiting Groves to Tennessee. He has been on him for a few years now and what they spoke about has become reality,

“Coach Chop called me when I was young my freshman year and they bought me up there on the visit,” Groves said. “He told me that he could see me doing this and that and now I see myself in high school doing exact things he said I can do but now now it’s on a different level. He has shown me what I can do in college for Tennessee and I can actually see that and it’s actually nice. I want to see myself doing big things and I think Tennessee is the right place to do it.”

The first year Vol LEO coach got to know the whole family and his relationship based approach hit home for Groves,

“Mainly, he throw football out of the way,” Groves said. “It’s really like how I’m doing in my life like how everything going. I really like how they down to earth. They talk about your whole family before anything about football so I really like he is trying to get to know me and I’m trying to get to know him and that really started like freshman year.”

And when they actually talk football, Groves gets the overall view of where his game is and can be.

“Really physical and he like the speed in which I play the game,” Groves said. “The first step and all that. Even though there’s a lot to work on, just the speed. I need to keep working on my hands and really footwork. But mainly my hands and my hand placement.”

Groves has developed a great relationship with Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel. He loves his laid-back and friendly nature.

“The people really stood out and coach Heup and I like you don’t get any better than that,” Groves said. “He is a nice guy and like just seeing the players and how they talk to the coaches its all love up there for sure.

“Coach Heup is not like all these other coaches. He is going to talk to you and he isn’t like a Hollywood type guy. He is going to sit there and talk to you and joke around.”

“That’s all I’ve seen every where I’ve went,” Groves said, “My family always been Tennessee fans so I used to see some of the games. It’s really not just my family members wanting me to go there but it’s just right there and a nice school. I liked it as soon as I went out there and it just felt different.”

A different feeling turned into the perfect pick as Groves is staying home.
