1-on-1 with 2017 UT Target: Coy McMillon
ABILENE – There’s another McMillon coming down the pipeline.
The 6-foot-4, 275-pounder from Abilene isn’t a stranger to the recruiting game. The Tulsa commit has had his fair share of suitors since a breakout summer in which he hit multiple camps and garnering tons of exposure. For a west Texas kid, that can be hard to come by. And Texas has noticed.
But he’s worked hard this offseason to make himself a complete player and the offers have followed – Tulsa, Tulane, North Texas, and Arkansas State among the others.
But one school has caught his eye; the Texas Longhorns. It doesn’t hurt that his brother, Jake, is now the starting LG for the UT offensive attack that is putting up record numbers. He’s visited plenty of Texas games to watch his big brother play on the big stage, but last weekend’s trip to Austin was as a recruiting target.
“I visited last weekend for the Baylor game and had a great time,” said the humble McMillon. “Coach Mattox and coach Traylor invited me. They’re both great coaches and am excited they’re interested in me.”
Despite the sudden pursuit from the Longhorns and the fact his brother, Jake, is in Austin, he’s stands firm in his pledge to Tulsa. He’s built an outstanding relationship with Tulsa OL coach Mike Bloesch.
Would a Texas offer change his mind? That’s the question.
“Obviously it would be an outstanding opportunity if Texas offered, with or without Jake being there. Him being there definitely would be a perk.”

And the feedback he gets from Jake is all positive. “Jake moved around a lot earlier on. He played DT twice, then finally settled along the offensive line at the end of the spring and early fall. He’s loves Texas. I’m really so proud of him.”
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Longhorns continue its pursuit of the underrated big man from west Texas. An offer closer to National Signing Day wouldn’t surprise me either. He’s caught the Texas coaches attention. And after losing Xavier Newman to Colorado, there’s an OL spot available. Only time will tell.
UT views him as an offensive lineman, preferably at guard or tackle. But he might be a better athlete than Jake, and especially versatile. He’s played both sides of the ball, and even seen a little time at TE. But can he catch?
“I’ve got some hands,” McMillon said with a smile.
Check out McMillon’s highlights. He’s definitely one to watch as UT starts the home stretch towards NSD in February.
