We’ll also look back at other greats to wear that day’s number, with special reverence to some of Texas’ best.

Today is 19 days until kickoff. No. 19 for the Longhorns this season will be worn by Cole Lourd, a junior walk-on quarterback

Cole Lourd season outlook

Lourd has not seen any game action in his first two seasons on the 40 Acres. He is a three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (fall 2021, spring 2022, fall 2022).

Recent player to wear No. 19 Justin Tucker

Justin Tucker (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Tucker is star of perhaps the most-viewed YouTube clip in Texas football history. He kicked the winning field goal to beat Texas A&M on the final play of the game in 2011 in what, until the upcoming 2024 season, was the “final” game between the Longhorns and their storied rivals. He has gone on to become the most accurate kicker in NFL history in a 12-year pro career, all with Baltimore.

Tucker handled the kickoff duties in 52 games and placekicking duties in 25 contests in his four seasons at Texas. He was a second-team All-Big 12 (AP, San Antonio Express-News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram) and honorable mention (Coaches) in 2011, the same year he was named to the Lou Groza Award watch list.

Tucker was 40-of-48 (.833) on field goal attempts and 71-for-71 on PAT attempts for 190 career points and his .833 FG percentage was tied for third best on the UT career list when he finished as a Longhorn. He was also a rugby-style punter punted 155 times for 6,283 yards (40.5 ypk), including 22 over 50 yards, while landing 56 inside the 20.

Never one to shy away from contact, Tucker posted 24 career special-teams tackles.
