Texas needed to start somewhere with its 2023 class.

When Jeff Banks and Terry Joseph turned their eyes to Dallas-Fort Worth, they found what they were looking for. Arlington Seguin DB Jamel Johnson committed to Texas, choosing the Longhorns over 30+ other offers.

Excerpt from the Recruiting Notebook

Strengths: A tall athlete with longish arms. Has plenty of room to add bulk. A long strider, he has above average long speed and his hustle plays show him catching quite a few guys downfield. Shows some lower body explosiveness on film (would like to see measurables). He has film at safety and corner (including nickel/slot). Could grow into a prototypical 3-4 corner. Shows press man as well as off coverage. Appears very instinctive with great downhill commitment to run support. Is a willing tackler and generally squares up the runner. Very good hand fighter in press and run support. Doesn’t declare his hips too early and will flip easily and run with the receiver. Very good change of direction. Doesn’t seem to ever panic when beat and shows good recovery speed. Plays the mesh point and shoots his hands through the catch point. Good ball skills with soft hands on offense and catches the ball fluidly. Will contribute on special teams early.

Areas for Improvement: Backpedal is choppy and doesn’t look as comfortable in off coverage. Acceleration appears average but may look quicker in person. Will throw shoulders at ball carriers at times. Would like to see him wrap up consistently.

Johnson is the first member of Texas’ 2023 recruiting class.
