48 days until Texas Football: Patrick Bayouth and his window for playing time
Inside Texas is putting a new twist on long-time photographer Will Gallagher’s time-honored countdown to Texas football kickoff. In addition to Will’s great pictures, the Inside Texas staff will go through every player on the roster by jersey number and offer a season outlook on each, from five-star to walk-on.

We’ll also look back at other greats to wear that day’s number, with special reverence to some of Texas’ best.
Today is 48 days until kickoff. No. 48 for the Longhorns this season will be worn by Patrick Bayouth, a senior tight end.
Patrick Bayouth season outlook
Bayouth is a valuable presence in the tight end room as one of the handful of walk-on players at the position. His size and previous position could present an opportunity for playing time during short yardage situations, but if that doesn’t come to fruition then his ability to be the analog for opposing blockers on the scout team will prove useful this season.

Bayouth has played in four games in his four seasons at Texas. He switched from defensive lineman to tight end during fall camp in 2022 and played in the Longhorns’ wins over Louisiana-Monroe, Oklahoma and Kansas. As a junior in 2021 Bayouth played at DE against Rice. He did not see any action in his first two years on the 40 Acres.
In memory of Jake Ehlinger
Jake Ehlinger tragically passed away on May 6, 2021. Ehlinger, the younger brother of UT quarterback Sam Ehlinger, was a walk-on linebacker who joined the Longhorns after a standout career at Austin (Texas) Westlake.
During the 2021 season, members of the team ran onto the field with a No. 48 flag. The Silver Spurs, the organization who takes care of Bevo, used a similar flag this past year while leading the Longhorn mascot out of the tunnel.
