Inside Texas is putting a new twist on long-time photographer Will Gallagher’s time-honored countdown to Texas football kickoff. In addition to Will’s great pictures, the Inside Texas staff will go through every player on the roster by jersey number and offer a season outlook on each, from five-star to walk-on.

We’ll also look back at other greats to wear that day’s number, with special reverence to some of Texas’ best.

Today is 73 days until kickoff. No. 73 for the Longhorns this season will be worn by Max Merril, a sophomore offensive lineman.

Max Merril season outlook

Merril is a depth piece at left guard behind Hayden Conner and Neto Umeozulu. Merril has not seen any action in his first two seasons at Texas. He is a two-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (fall 2021, spring 2022).

Notable player to wear No. 73: Jonathon Scott

Jonathan Scott (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)

Scott was a four-year player for the Longhorns and a two-time All-American. In 2005, Scott earned Unanimous first-team All-America honors from the five major selectors recognized by the NCAA in addition to his second consecutive first-team All-Big 12 selection. A key piece of the Longhorns’ back-to-back Rose Bowl winning teams and Vince Young‘s blindside protector, Scott attended Dallas Carter prior to his Texas career.

Scott was drafted in the fifth round of the 2006 draft and played in parts of eight years in the NFL. He recently began his prep coaching career with Plano (Texas) John Paul II.
