A look back at how Texas’ 2022 signing class fared as freshmen - Pt. 1

There were 28 players that enrolled at Texas after high school as part of a 2022 signing class ranked fifth nationally.

Some of those freshman had immediate impacts for the Longhorns’ 8-5 season. Others are primed for success this season as Texas competes for the final time in the Big 12 Conference. And some may have further to go in their development before finding a spot in the two-deep rotation.

Here’s part 1 of our look at how the 28 freshmen fared in 2022.

DJ Campbell, OL
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 11 overall (five-star)

Campbell played seven games last year and in six of the last eight games, including each of the last three regular season contests and the Alamo Bowl.

Kelvin Banks, OL
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 22 overall (five-star)

Banks played and started in all 13 games in 2022. He was a second-team All-Big 12 Selection by both the Big 12 Conference’s coaches and the Associated Press while also being tabbed honorable mention Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year by the league’s coaches. Banks also garnered a spot on the ESPN 2022 Preseason True Freshman All-American team.

Terrance Brooks, DB
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 56 overall (four-star)

Brooks played in nine games with three starts last year while racking up nine tackles (five solo) with three pass breakups.

Neto Umeozulu, OL
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 76 overall (four-star)

Umeozulu saw action in three games in 2022 as was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll last fall.

Brenen Thompson, WR
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 101 overall (four-star)

Thompson played in nine games in 2022, catching one pass for 32 yards against Oklahoma State. He was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (fall 2022). Thompson transferred to Oklahoma in the Spring of 2023.

B.J. Allen Jr., DB
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 119 overall (four-star)

Allen did not see any game action last year.

Justice Finkley, EDGE
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 126 overall (four-star)

Finkley saw action in 12 games and amassed seven tackles (one solo) with half a tackle for loss, half a sack and one quarterback hurry. The early enrollee is a two-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (spring 2022, fall 2022).

J’mond Tapp, EDGE
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 130 overall (four-star)

Tapp played in two games last year and recorded statistics in both. He had a tackle in the season opener against the Louisiana-Monroe and added a quarterback hurry against UTSA. Tapp was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (fall 2022).

Jaray Bledsoe, DL
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 145 overall (four-star)

Bledsoe saw action in one game in 2022, making a tackle against Louisiana-Monroe. The early enrollee is a two-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (spring 2022, fall 2022).

Jaylon Guilbeau, DB
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 151 overall (four-star)

Guilbeau was an immediate contributor, playing in eight games with three starts including the season-opener against Louisiana-Monroe. He finished the season with 19 tackles (eight solo), half a sack, four quarterback hurries and two pass breakups despite missing the final five games with a knee injury. The early enrollee is a two-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (spring 2022, fall 2022).

Kristopher Ross, DL
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 178 overall (four-star)

Ross played in one game, recording two tackles in the season-opener against Louisiana-Monroe.

Jaydon Blue, RB
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 180 overall (four-star)

Blue played in nine games, carrying the ball 15 times for a total of 33 yards last season.
