It is well documented that Texas A&M dropped from preseason No. 1 in several polls to their current unranked position. But after an abysmal 1-8 start to Southeastern Conference play, the Aggies no longer look like the same hapless team. They’ve gone 7-2 in SEC play with road series wins against No. 1 Tennessee and No. 2 Arkansas. The Aggies are a red maroon hot ball club as they head into an emotional rivalry series unranked.

If you had fallen into a coma the day before the season had started and were woken up the day after A&M was no hit by Tennessee, you would likely wonder why the Aggies aren’t still the No. 1 team in the nation. Even if you include the first Tennessee game, Texas A&M has recently outscored opponents 112-59. They are dominating the competition, and they have walked into two hostile environments and left as winners.

Over the last 10 games it is hard to find a hotter team than the Aggies. They are hitting 2.6 home runs per game, batting .315 as a team, and reaching base at a .442 clip. It is clear they are not only taking quality at bats, but barreling up the the ball. When they get on base they are stealing bases successfully 88.2% of the time. The Aggie offense is wide awake after failing to record a hit against the Volunteers.

Looking at the Aggies’ pitching from the last 10 games, they aren’t far off from their season averages, but that’s not a criticism. They are allowing 2.9 extra base hits per game, a bit higher than Texas’ 1.8 per game. This staff hasn’t surrendered a ton of walks save for the slugfest against South Carolina. Earning bases on balls against this staff hasn’t been an easy task for opponents. Plus, A&M is striking out batters just as often as Texas.

This ball club is coming in hotter than a plate of freshly made fajitas at Matt’s El Rancho. Don’t let the lack of a ranking fool you, this is a dangerous ball club that is looking to upset a third straight top-two team on the road.

Oh yeah, remember how Jim Schlossnagle left them for Texas? There will be some Aggies that have played great ball of late heading to the Disch with an emotional chip on their shoulder this weekend.

The Longhorns first face Texas State tonight at 6 p.m. in San Marcos. SEC Network+ will televise the contest. The Bobcats topped Texas 5-3 in Austin on April 1, and are 19-20 (8-10 SBC) on the season.
