The Longhorns were glad to welcome a Big 10 team following opening weekend struggles in Arlington versus Arkansas, Missouri, and Vanderbilt, three Southeastern Conference teams. After taking care of business in the home opener last week versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas took two of three from the Indiana Hoosiers in the first weekend series of the year at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

TCU transfer Porter Brown was a key part of Texas’ winning efforts, hitting a three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth on Friday to boost Texas to a 4-2 win. Brown also helped secure a win for Zane Morehouse on Saturday, driving in two runs to support Morehouse’s 5.0 innings of one-run ball.

Texas succumbed to the Hoosiers on Sunday, dropping game three in what UT head coach David Pierce called one of his most embarrassing losses.

On Tuesday, the challenge is a great one and it once again hails from the SEC. The No. 1 team in every major poll, the LSU Tigers, comes to the Disch for a midweek game.

Texas is no stranger to LSU. In 2018, the Tigers took two of three at Alex Box Stadium. In 2019, the Longhorns swept then-No. 2 LSU in Austin. In 2020, the two programs squared off prior to the suspension of the season in Houston at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Classic, with LSU taking the matchup by a score of 4-3. Two years later at the same event, the Horns topped the Bayou Bengals 6-1 in front of a crowd of 24,787 at Minute Maid Park.

LSU heads to the Disch with a 6-1 record. Jay Johnson’s team just played in the Round Rock Classic at Dell Diamond, defeating Kansas State and Sam Houston but falling to Iowa.

The Tigers have some of the best players in the nation on their roster, including Dylan Crews and Tommy White. LSU is hitting .328 as a team through seven games and have already slugged 10 homers.

Pierce mentioned on Sunday he would likely send Lebarron Johnson to the hill. Johnson, a 6-foot-4 righty from Jacksonville, Fla., earned his first career win last Tuesday versus A&M-CC with a 5.0-inning outing where he allowed three hits and one earned run via a homer. He struck out eight, walked three, and lowered his ERA to 4.50 in the process.

On Tuesday, The Advocate’s Leah Vann reported that right-hander Thatcher Hurd would be the Tiger starter. Hurd started in LSU’s only midweek appearance so far this season versus Southern, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits with three walks. He was replaced by Christian Little, who allowed one hit and walked one over 3.2 innings, striking out six on his way to the win.

Two teams with six national championships apiece will square off Tuesday night with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch time. Longhorn Network will televise the contest, while it can be heard on 104.9 The Horn in Austin.
