AUSTIN — Despite substandard results on the hardwood from the Longhorn basketball program in the last five seasons, they continue to thrive on the one night the NBA holds its amateur draft.
That Texas tradition continued tonight when freshman center/forward Jarrett Allen was selected by the Brooklyn Nets with the 22nd overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
The Austin native averaged 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds during his lone season in Austin.
Allen, a McDonald’s All-American, was a consensus five star prospect coming out of St. Stephen’s High School. He chose Texas over Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, and North Carolina, among others.
Allen joins LaSalle Thompson (1982, Kansas City), Travis Mays (1990, Sacramento), Lance Blanks (1990, Detroit), B.J. Tyler (1994, Philadelphia), Chris Mihm (2000, Chicago), T.J. Ford (2003, Milwaukee), LaMarcus Aldridge (2006, Chicago), Kevin Durant (2007, Seatle), D.J. Augustin (2008, Charlotte), Avery Bradley (2010, Boston), Damion James (2010, Atlanta), Tristan Thompson (2011, Cleveland), Jordan Hamilton (2011, Dallas), Cory Joseph (2011, San Antonio) and Myles Turner (2015, Indiana) as the 16th Longhorn ever taken in the first round.

Former University of Texas basketball standout Jarrett Allen was selected as the No. 22 pick by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2017 NBA Draft on Thursday evening at Barclays Center. Allen is the 16th first-round selection in the NBA Draft in UT program history.

He has all the attributes of a player who will get better and better with time. Jarrett also is a high-level, high-character individual and that matters. During his one season at Texas (2016-17), Allen claimed All-Big 12 Conference Third Team and Big 12 All-Newcomer Team accolades. He also earned a spot on the 10-person United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District VII Team and the five-person National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 8 Second Team.

Allen led the team in rebounding (8.4 rpg), blocked shots (51) and minutes played (32.1 mpg) and ranked second on the team in scoring (13.4 ppg). He converted 56.6% (179-316) from the field and reached double figures in scoring 25 times and double figures in rebounds 14 times in 33 games played.
Allen recorded 12 double-doubles on the season (tied for third-highest total by a UT freshman in school history), including eight in Big 12 Conference play. He also ranked fourth on the UT freshman season chart in total rebounds (278) and fourth in rebounding average (8.4 rpg).
In Big 12 Conference play, he averaged a team-best 16.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game while converting 59.9% (118-197) from the field. Allen reached double figures in scoring in 17 of the 18 league games.
Since the NBA Draft began in 1947, a total of 43 Longhorns have now heard their names called on draft night.
