Antico, Quintanilla selected in day two of 2021 MLB draft

Two Longhorns were selected in the second day of the 2021 MLB draft. Senior outfielder Mike Antico was selected in the eighth round by the St. Louis Cardinals, and sophomore right-hander Cole Quintanilla was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the ninth round.
The two join Ty Madden as 2021 Longhorn draftees with the third day and rounds 11-20 still to go. Madden was selected by the Detroit Tigers with the 32nd overall pick.
Antico, who began his college career at St. John’s, was an All-Big 12 second team member in 2021. He hit .273 with 63 hits, 10 homers, and 47 RBI. He was 41-of-46 on the base paths, a mark that was second nationally behind Vanderbilt’s Enrique Bradfield, Jr.

After struggling in the early portions of the season, Antico became a consistent threat at the top of the Longhorn order as Big 12 play began. In conference games, Antico hit .303/.435/.629 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with 27 hits, 20 walks, and 24 RBI.

Quintanilla, a product of Cedar Park High School, was one of David Pierce’s best options out of the bullpen in the 2021 season. In 26 appearances, Quintanilla was 5-1 with a 1.35 ERA and a team-best 0.83 WHIP. Opponents hit .165 against him in 40.0 innings.
