It’s not just the five-stars and the front-line guys.
When injuries pile up, as they are for the Horns right now, it’s the depth and overall quality of your recruiting classes that typically shine through later in the season.
Think back to Saturday afternoon. And put the shoe on the other foot.
If Houston had sustained the same level of injuries as Texas, lost its starting quarterback, three cornerbacks, and four or five others throughout the contest, would the Cougars have been able to be as competitive or even pull out a win?
No, of course not. They didn’t pull out the win even with the vast majority of their first line guys.
In fact, UH lost a key player – a defensive lineman – on its final defensive drive. The result? CJ Baxter ran right over his replacement for the game’s final touchdown.

And it’s not just UH where this matters. It’s the teams Texas will play down the stretch, too, where the depth and quality of the Longhorns will have to be on full display.
A lot of people focus only on the starting lineup, only on the stars of the team. But one of the truly great things about the sport of football is that the entire team typically matters through the entirety of a season. Maybe not 1-85 on scholarship, but at least 1-55 or so.
And that’s why recruiting and now the portal is the lifeblood of a program. It’s not always the five-stars, like St. Louis receiver Ryan Wingo, who is set to announce later today between Missouri and the Horns.
A team of any sort is often only as good as its weakest link.
