Every year, respected college football insider Bruce Feldman of The Athletic publishes the “Freaks List.” Feldman describes it as a list of the 100 top physical specimens using “submissions from schools, coaches, teammates, parents, NFL scouts, combine trainers and agents.”

Last year, Byron Murphy was No. 18 and the only player from the Longhorn roster included on the 100-man list (though there were some former Longhorns included). This year, only one UT player made the cut again. Texas senior EDGE Barryn Sorrell was the No. 79 “freak” on the list.

Here’s what Feldman wrote about Sorrell:

The 6-4, 260-pound senior clocked one of the fastest max velocity times of any D-lineman in college football last fall when he hit 19.4 mph during a game. Texas coaches are excited for Sorrell to take his game to another level after he had a terrific offseason. Sorrell bench pressed 425 pounds, squatted 575 and power cleaned 355, but coaches say the most impressive number is his explosive burst for his size. He consistently has registered 20 mph on the Catapult system.

Sorrell, a product of New Orleans (La.) Holy Cross, was a part of the Longhorns’ 2021 class. He’s played in 33 games with 24 starts, most of them at the Jack position in Pete Kwiatkowski‘s defense.

In 2023, Sorrell was an All-Big 12 honorable mention by the league’s coaches. He tallied 37 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks. In 2022, he was once again a All-Big 12 honorable mention. He played in 13 games with 10 starts, totaling 44 tackles, 9.0 TFL, 5.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a pass breakup, and seven hurries.

Listed at 6-foot-4, 260 pounds, Sorrell is one of the leaders of the Longhorn defense. He’ll be the first man up at Jack again this year and is looking to parlay a successful Texas career into a selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Players on the Longhorns’ schedule to make Feldman’s list include Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant, Michigan quarterback Alex Orji, Arkansas EDGE Landon Jackson, Michigan cornerback Will Johnson, Georgia offensive lineman Dylan Fairchild, Vanderbilt defensive back Kolbey Taylor, Oklahoma wideout Deion Burks, Mississippi State defensive tackle Trevion Williams, Vanderbilt tight end Eli Stowers, Michigan tight end Marlin Klein, Texas A&M guard Chase Bisontis, and UTSA defensive back Donyai Taylor.
