* Guns down – The Texas baseball team is obliged and required (yes, that’s purposely redundant to emphasize to cruelty) to travel to Lubbock this weekend for a Big 12 series against the Red Raiders. Undoubtedly the Longhorns will face more TTU fan wrath, as that appears to be the norm now, both at the site of competition when these two schools play and also on social media. It seems that little brother Tech is still quite miffed at Texas leaving for the Southeastern Conference, and of course everyone in the Panhandle also continues to be shocked appalled that Chris Beard left Tech and took more money to become the head coach of his alma mater.

And how dare he choose Austin over Lubbock! All of this Tech drama has deepened my desire for the Longhorns to beat the Red Raiders in everything, all the time, as much as possible. But also all the Tech hate toward Texas has placed, at least my mind, the Red Raiders in a different location in my head (yes, the Red Raiders are in my head). Now, instead of merely rooting for Texas to defeat Tech on the fields of play, I now also hope the Red Raiders lose when they are playing other teams – Exhibit A of this new bit of fandom was the other night when I was rooting for Notre Dame (egads!) to PLEASE beat Texas Tech in the tournament. Alas, it was not to be, but clearly Texas Tech has gone at least partially into the realm of Aggieness, as it pertains to myself and many of Texas graduates. Thank you, Mike Krzyzewski.

* Women’s hoops – Vic Shaefer’s Texas women’s basketball team, officially an Elite Eight team, has a legitimate chance to reach the Final Four this season. Texas will face Stanford on their side of the bracket, a team whom they have already beaten in November. Both South Carolina and UConn are on the other side of the bracket, so the Cardinal is likely the best team Texas will face until the Longhorns run into the Gamecocks and/or the Huskies. Nice to see Jody Conradt riding along with this wave and being included and involved in this run.

* Shorts and shells – The Texas football team remained undefeated for its entire existence on the first day of spring practice this week. Players looked in shape and eager. The head coach was predictably bland in his answers to probing questions such as “How’d they look?” and “What are your general thoughts?” Most importantly, no one got hurt. And even though you didn’t ask, I’ll tell you: no, Steve Sarkisian did not name a starting quarterback for the 2022 football season.
