Big 12 football nerds might be familiar with the name Jason McEndoo. The Big 12, long known for its coaching and schematic chops, has been buoyed by a number of excellent head coaches. Head coaches like Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy. McEndoo served as Gundy’s tight ends and fullbacks coach for 10 years.

This is of note because Ok. St. deployed a position called the Cowboy Back which is essentially a fullback/tight end hybrid. These players have to be versatile. They’re run blockers (both lead and kick-out), pass blockers, motion-men, receivers in the short and intermediate, and sometimes even runners. The Cowboy Back adds flexibility to an offense and the ability to create mismatches. They can be very effective assets in the red zone.

What’s intriguing is the Cowboy Back is the specific evaluation one might have for true freshman Emaree Winston. It’s also a workload fellow incoming tight end Nick Townsend is capable of fulfilling.

The hire could also positively impact projected tight end starter Jordan Washington. Washington, a redshirt freshman with plus athleticism, is already a fine receiver but is still learning the nuances of blocking.

Notable Cowboy Backs include former Dallas Cowboy Blake Jarwin, who played at Oklahoma State from 2013-2016, and Jelani Woods, currently with the Indianapolis Colts, who played at Oklahoma State from 2017-2020. Jarwin was a walk-on whose NFL career was cut short due to injury.

It’s unclear to Inside Texas what McEndoo’s specific title will be but it’s very likely he’ll work with tight ends coach Jeff Banks in some capacity. This won’t be McEndoo’s first time being on the same team with Banks. They had an overlapping year at Washington State where Banks was the punter and McEndoo was the center.

With McEndoo’s experience of working with Gundy, Steve Sarkisian may add a page or two to his already robust playbook.
