Freshman wide receiver Brenen Thompson elected to stay at Spearman High School for his spring semester in 2022 so that he could have one more opportunity to represent the Lynx on the track. He set out with the goal to defend his title in the UIL 3A 200-meter finals and win the 100-meter title after finishing second in 2021.

He accomplished those missions at the 2022 state meet. Though neither of his times were wind legal, Thompson pulled off the 100m-200m double with times of 10.24 and 20.73. Following the Texas Longhorns’ 8-5 2022 football season, Thompson is back on the track at Mike A. Myers Stadium and looking to move from point A to point B as quickly as possible for Edrick Floréal’s program.

Thompson, listed at 5-foot-10, 163 pounds, was an On3 Consensus four-star prospect and the No. 101 overall player in the 2021 class. He did it all on the football field for Spearman. He had 2280 rushing yards for 34 touchdowns, 1182 passing yards for 15 touchdowns, 1196 receiving yards for 14 touchdowns, and over 1500 return yards with five touchdowns in his career in the Panhandle.

At Texas, he was destined to play wide receiver for the Longhorns and UT head coach Steve Sarkisian. Thompson played in nine games during his freshman campaign, including each of the last seven, but had just one reception for 32 yards. However, that lone came at an important juncture in the Longhorns’ game at Oklahoma State, and it showcased Thompson’s elite speed that colleges like Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech sought during the recruiting process.

Thompson isn’t currently listed on the Texas track and field roster, as the team just began the indoor season and will compete in the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky. this weekend. However, Inside Texas was told Thompson will be a part of the men’s outdoor track team that finished as national runner-up last season (the women’s program also finished as national runner-up). Outdoor season gets underway March 4 with the Longhorn Invitational in Austin.

The football-track double at Texas isn’t uncommon. Marquise Goodwin may be the most notable Longhorn to pull it off, but wide receiver John Burt accomplished the feat a few years back and even took home several individual Big 12 title and All-America honors during his extended collegiate career.

Thompson is just the latest to attempt to pull it off. What his football responsibilities will be during the spring are not yet known.

But as the graphic above shows, he’s back to work on the same track where he has already accomplished plenty.
