Brooks Kieschnick Jr., son of Texas baseball legend, commits to Texas as PWO

Texas kept it in the family with the latest addition to the preferred walk-on ranks. 2023 San Antonio (Texas) Alamo Heights OL Brooks Kieschnick Jr., son of Longhorn baseball legend Brooks Kieschnick, committed to Texas on Tuesday.

Kieschnick Jr. visited Texas on Monday to take in the Longhorns’ first practice of the spring along with his mother and father. Kieschnick Jr. was offered a preferred walk-on opportunity on January 26.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder surrendered zero sacks and committed zero penalties, according to his Twitter page. The Mules were 11-2 during the 2023 season and went 9-0 in 5A-Division 2 District 14. AHHS fell to Liberty Hill, 37-32, in the second round of the playoffs.

He joins fellow Alamo Heights Mule Rett Anderson as a preferred walk-on commit for the Longhorns.

Kieschnick Jr. had a football offer from Trinity, and is accomplished on the baseball diamond as well.

Kieschnick, whose No. 23 is retired by the Longhorn baseball program, earned a number of accolades as a two-way player for former Texas head coach Cliff Gustafson. He was a two-time Dick Howser Award winner, a three-time Southwest Conference player of the year, a three-time first-team All-American, and a three-time first-team All-SWC player. He was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.

The Longhorns made two College World Series appearances while Kieschnick was on campus. He was selected by the Chicago Cubs in 1993 with the tenth overall pick of the 1993 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

During his career, with the Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds, the Colorado Rockies, and the Milwaukee Brewers, Kieschnick was 2-2 with a 4.59 ERA and 67 strikeouts. He added 16 home runs and 16 RBI with a .248 average during his career.
