AUSTIN — Stan Drayton’s search for a running back led him to Georgia, where he found Derrian Brown.

Brown, a 5-foot-10, 180 pound back from Buford, Georgia chose the Longhorns today. Texas beat out 29 other schools for Brown’s commitment including Penn State, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, and Ohio State among many others.

Ian Boyd on Brown: You’d guess this fellow was much heavier from his running style, which is very physical and doesn’t shy from the good living to be had in the interior gaps. His HS is clearly no joke and evidently went 11-2 last year while running a tight zone/power offense from the gun with TEs much like the system Herman brought to Texas.

So Brown knows the reads, can make the right cuts in those schemes, and relishes the downhill angles that make the system go. He’s also got some breakaway speed, with a laser timed 4.62 but then also film that reveals an excellent transmission system and acceleration. He has the right tools and mentality to be a dangerous back in the Longhorn stable.

Brown becomes the 16th member of Texas’ 2019 class joining Javonne Shepherd (North Forest), Marcus Tillman (Jones – FL), DeMariyon Houston (Millwood – OK), Marques Caldwell (Alvin), Chris Adimora (Lakewood – CA), Peter Mpagi (George Ranch), Jake Smith (Notre Dame Prep – AZ), Jared Wiley (Temple), Tyler Johnson (Conroe Oak Ridge), Brayden Liebrock (Chandler – AZ), Kenyatta Watson II (Grayson – GA), De’Gabriel Floyd (Westlake – CA), Jordan Whittington (Cuero), T’Vondre Sweat (Huntsville), and Roschon Johnson (Port Neches-Groves).
