Byron Murphy declares for the 2024 NFL draft
Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy, the 2024 Big 12 defensive lineman of the year, will forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Murphy, a junior from DeSoto, tallied 29 tackles with 8.5 for loss and 5.0 sacks during the 2023 season while also scoring two touchdowns.

Murphy joins Xavier Worthy as early declarations from the 2023 Longhorns.
In 2023, Murphy earned first-team All-Big 12 honors as well as several second-team All-America honors. Alongside T’Vondre Sweat, Murphy helped form one of the most feared defensive tackle duos in the nation. They helped the Longhorn defense finish third nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 82.36 yards per game on the ground. He also helped on offense, scoring a receiving touchdown versus Wyoming and rushing for a score against Washington in the College Football Playoff.
Murphy was one of the best defensive tackles in the nation according to Pro Football Focus, earning an overall grade of 91.1 from the scouting service.

In 2022, Murphy and Sweat were second stringers behind eventual NFL draft picks Moro Ojomo and Keondre Coburn. Murphy tallied 26 tackles with 3.0 for loss and 1.0 sack. During his freshman year in 2021, Murphy had 15 tackles with 3.5 for loss and 2.0 sacks.

A member of the class of 2021, Murphy was ranked as the No. 380 overall prospect, the No. 36 defensive lineman, and the No. 51 player in Texas according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
On3 rated Murphy as a four-star prospect with an overall grade of 91.
