Carson chooses Texas

AUSTIN — Texas’ class of 2018 continues to grow in size and talent. Today, the Longhorns added someone with both.
2018 Independence (MO) William Chrisman DL Daniel Carson committed to Texas today. Carson had competing offers from Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Miami (FL), and Ohio State among others.
After Charles Omenihu graduates following next season, Texas will need players to man the 4i defensive end position. Today, they got a player to play in that spot.

How he fits at Texas: Carson is a great 4i prospect because he has the length and size to handle grappling with offensive tackles but he’s a legit athlete on the edge. Carson has a nice burst off the ball but he’s also got some closing speed in space to utilize after he’s gained initial leverage on his man or won into the backfield. Carson could also play inside with some seasoning in a four-down front. This is more or less what Texas is looking for in 4i prospects. – IB

Coach says: Strengths – Good size for the defensive line with room to add more weight. More toned in the midsection than fat. Very good strength especially in the upper body with long arms to fend off blockers. Good straight line speed for size. Reasonably good hip roll when engaged. Areas for Improvement/Concern – Slow out of his stance. Pad level can get too high at times. Relies too much on upper body strength and doesn’t shed blockers as easily as you’d expect. Gets off balance when trying to change direction. Appears a beat slow trying to diagnose the play. Caught flat-footed several times on his own highlight tape. How this affects Texas: Carson is an interesting prospect. He took his OV to Austin back in September and gave Team Herman high marks. This is the guy that fits the 4i like a glove in Orlando’s schemes. He’s high on Nebraska, Miami, and the Longhorns. Getting him back this month would be huge. And also needed. With roughly 2-3 spots left for d-linemen, Carson is a guy to remember. – JW
