The day after Texas head coach Charlie Strong landed East Texas (Bullard) TE Major Tennison, he decided to stay in the area and grab another prospect.

A big one.

Liberty Eylau junior 5-star DL Lagaryonn Carson has committed to the Texas Longhorns today. Carson, all 6-foot-5, 245 pounds of the beast from East Texas holds offers from Alabama, Texas A&M, TCU, and Baylor among others.

Carson joins Major Tennsion (TE – Bullard), Damion Miller (WR – John Tyler) , and Sam Ehlinger (QB – Austin Westlake) in UT’s Class of 2017.

Excerpt from the Recruiting Notebook 5/16/15:

Lagaryonn Carson, DT, Liberty Eylau (2017)
How he fits at Texas: Shawn Oakman redux. Carson was often over-powering as a sophomore relying simply on strength and motor and his eventual future as a 6-6, 280 pound end is a promising one. In high school he frequently played wide contain as a 4-3 DE and could close on the ball in space or fight through the wash to reach the ball carrier. At Texas that range combined with further growth and development could turn him into an ideal 3-3 DE who’s an excellent run blocker but can contribute to creating a viable 3-man pass rush. We’ll have to check back in on his pass-rushing and physical development in a year. – Ian Boyd

My post from March on Carson:

1. The pursuit of Lagaryonn Carson. And it begins. Last fall Gilmer faced Liberty Eylau in the 1st round of the 3A playoffs. Despite dominating the overmatched Leopards, one guy the Buckeyes couldn’t block was Carson, who was 220 at the time and is now 255. Texas TE coach Jeff Traylor didn’t forget that. So when UT stopped by practice last week, he made sure to seek out Carson. A week later, UT was his first offer, followed by Alabama a few hours later and Tennessee the next day. I’ve heard A&M and Baylor will offer soon. Like 24-48 hours soon. Until then, Carson reflected on Texas, his family, and more.

“Being my first offer was really cool,” said Carson, who is cousins with Texas A&M RB Tra Carson and Baylor WR Davion Hall. “Texas only offers a few sophomores, so that tells me they think very highly of me. I also got to meet coach Traylor. He seems like a great dude and really liked my film. It’s just a great blessing.”

Other schools have stopped by and he understands his recruitment is only beginning.

“Baylor, A&M, TCU, and OU stopped by the other day,” Carson said. “Oklahoma State and Arkansas were also here. Alabama’s coach (Billy Napier) said they really like me too. Just a blessing to get this attention. I didn’t think it would happen so fast.”

Does Carson have any visits or camps set up yet?

“Not at this time but my coach said we’ll sit down soon and map out a schedule,” said Carson. “There’s a camp in Austin in June I’d like to attend so we’ll see.”

His 6-foot-1, 200-pound teammate Ke’mon Freeman is another example of the resurrection of athletes in LE. When we told you to remember Carson’s name in Wednesday’s Recruiting Notebook, we meant it. That morning when I posted his Hudl, he had zero views. He’s at 1,600+ as of this morning.

My early impression is that he’s a nice, well-mannered kid. He makes good grades and teachers seem to like him. This isn’t uncommon in the early stages of a recruitment. If he keeps this level head after 30+ offers, then you’ll know it’s real. He’s also called me three times in the last two days. His eagerness is one reason I love my job.
