Thompson, who started the last 10 games of the season after taking over for Hudson Card following the Longhorns’ loss at Arkansas, led the Big 12 in passing touchdowns this year with 24. He was 165-for-261 with 2113 yards and nine interceptions. He rushed 55 yards for 157 yards and four scores.
He led Texas to victories over Rice, Texas Tech, and TCU ahead of the Red River Shootout. He passed for 388 yards and five touchdowns against the Sooners, but during the course of the game injured his thumb. Both Thompson and Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian mentioned throughout the course of the 2021 season his thumb was not 100 percent, but he remained the starting quarterback the rest of the way.
He was quarterback during Texas’ six-game losing streak, but was pulled in the early portions of the 30-7 loss at Iowa State because he struggled to make any pass. He responded well against Kansas, throwing six touchdowns, but the Longhorn defense could not hold up their end of the deal.

Against West Virginia, Thompson aggravated his thumb and left the game once again, but returned to action at less than 100 percent when Card suffered a high ankle sprain.
In the season finale, he was barely a part of the game plan, with Texas opting to ride Roschon Johnson to snap the six-game losing streak.
He leaves with his degree in sport management, and has one year of eligibility plus an additional year of eligibility provided by the NCAA as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
