Champs!: Texas wins a share of the SEC regular season title

In their first year in the Southeastern Conference, the Texas Longhorns are on top. Texas (29-2, 15-1 SEC) clinched a share of the SEC regular season title on Sunday with its 72-46 win over Florida. The Longhorns will share the title with South Carolina (27-3, 15-1 SEC).

South Carolina had won three consecutive outright regular season titles before the arrival of the Longhorns. It’s the 13th regular season title for the program and first since the Longhorns won the 2023 Big 12 title. Due to the tie and the Longhorns and Gamecocks splitting the season series, the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament will be determined via a coin flip conducted by conference commissioner Greg Sankey.
Texas, currently the top ranked team in the AP Poll, is almost a shoo-in for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by Madison Booker, Shay Holle, Rori Harmon, and Kyla Oldacre, Texas suffered just two defeats in the regular season: one to South Carolina, and one in overtime to No. 3 Notre Dame.
Texas received significant contributions Sunday from those players just as they have all season. Booker scored 14 against the Gators, while Oldacre added 18. Despite a low scoring total, Harmon pulled down seven rebounds and added nine assists. Holle scored five points.
The title is one of the first in the SEC for the Longhorns and it comes in one of the league’s most competitive sports. Men’s and women’s swimming and soccer all earned titles, and football went to overtime in its quest for a conference championship. But among the most popular sports on the 40 Acres Vic Schaefer’s program brought home the first league title.

For Schaefer, it’s his fourth regular season title. Along with his 2023 title at Texas, Schaefer won SEC regular season championships in 2018 and 2019 with Mississippi State.
Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte recently mentioned he expects programs within his athletic department to contend for national championships and be within the top five of their sport in their respective seasons. One of the byproducts of that type of expectation is contention for conference titles.
In their quest to win the program’s second national championship, the Longhorns took on and defeated 15 of their 16 league opponents and exacted revenge against the one team that topped them in SEC play. Because of their success, Schaefer and legendary program figures like Booker and Harmon can add another conference championship banner to the Moody Center rafters.
