Chat Transcript: 9/26/2012
Inside Texas football experts (term used loosely) chat it up…let the words begin…
ClendonRoss says: Welcome, everyone! Great to see y’all here!
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Sup wit it fellas
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: I’m doing this from my man cave risking potential west nile contraction for y’all.
TWIYTC says: Well then, what are we going to do Saturday night if Hicks can’t play and Edmonds and Santos can’t get lined up or calmed down enough to keep from killing us?
Iz of Texas says: Hicks ain’t going on Saturday right? that’s the impression I am getting
pedronorte says: I’ll start…what’s up with A’Shawn and his visit to FSU
sessamoid says: we need some LBs to grow up REAL fast.
Hornaholics_Anonymous says: Is the team confident they will win?
pedronorte says: 1st offensive play called Saturyday night?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Pretty sure Hicks is out. Game’s going to be won or lost on defense with our DT’s though.
btown1110 says: Is Fera a go? Read a lot of conflicting stuff.
pedronorte says: I like Santo’s getting involved, no other assignment then…SMASH
Iz of Texas says: Would we consider going base nickel with only Steve and Demarco?
jcrogers23 says: Ash against Osu-300+yards and 3 tds= Ash4Heisman?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Seriously doubt we see deep drops from Walsh so our tackles have to push the pocket
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: I dont think fera is go. Will know more tonight
Jet Sweep says: D has been working on press and 3 step drops/slants
TXPride says: was Fera hurt before he came to Texas?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Iz, Probably. They’ll play 3 wides and a glorified TE.
Iz of Texas says: Fera no go? crap, that’s against everything we’ve heard.
sessamoid says: Fera had a previous injury which he reportedly reinjured while at Texas
NM Horn says: How confident do our coaches feel defensively going into the game without Hicks?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Jet, yep. and attacking their quick game. Which, as pedro put it means Santos Smash
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: TXpride, yes
sessamoid says: The DL really needs to get their hands up in the air to disrupt the short QBs passing lanes.
btown1110 says: What’s the latest with the guys we’re pursuing (Allen, Treadwell, Billings, Benenoch, Luke, etc), Nahlin?
jcrogers23 says: How many tds do we need to win by to make you think we will Big 12?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: I think we’ll squeeze the pocket with our DE’s and let guys like Moore ,Dorsey, Whaley attack. Pretty sure OSU’s center is out. They replace im with a 6-3 280 pound true soph
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: sess, agree on the DL, they worked on it yesterday
jmrob93 says: is Lund out for sure
sessamoid says: So basically our tackles are playing against Espinosa from last year? I like that matchu p
Patrick says: if the game is won from DT’s pressuring the pocket I like Brandon Moore to carry us on his shoulders
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: jc, if we win this game by a point we’re winning the big 12
Eric Nahlin says: Allen will be in for WVU, Treadwell is still getting to know the staff and school somewhat, Billings and Benenoch is in a holding pattern. Things are trending downward with Cole Luke but not drastically.
pedronorte says: and if we beat them by 30
TXPride says: is there anyone the asset expects a big game from?
bKINGfrisB says: how many times will McFarland be targeted?
btown1110 says: So do you feel like the WVU game will lock in the AZ kids?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: sess, yes, and one of their OG’s is 285 as well
pedronorte says: Any more touches for Daje? or efforts to get him into space?
jmrob93 says: I looked at Phil Steel todau he has OSU higher power ranked than us–must not handcap forDIII schools
btown1110 says: Oh dear Lord yes, small OL is a win
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Txpride, he says the secondary is full of piss and vinegar
jcrogers23 says: Phil Steele has playing in the MNC too.
NM Horn says: any redacted plays we can expect for saturday?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: pedro, win by 30 and damn, you tell me
sessamoid says: Our OGs should hold up pictures of girls romancing each other. McFarland will be forced to turn his head, then we pancake him.
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: bking, probably not much. He’s still making his way in the picture
jmrob93 says: However I average the power rankings of the SEC and Big 12 and the bifg 12 was half a point higher
pedronorte says: I just need to be able to go talk *** to my NGL guys that are going to the game come Monday morining
Eric Nahlin says: btown: I’m not sure if it will lock them iin, but I think it will only help, especially with Allen. I’ll have some interesting news coming out on Luke.
bKINGfrisB says: with magic mike having a good showing last wk, will Jaxon have a breakout game?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Daje will be a big part of this game. OSU’s weakness is DL and specifically D-ends
Patrick says: any clue on our strategy for kickoff’s? I don’t like the idea of kicking off to Gilbert
UTexasfootball says: Hicks out is huge against OkSt because we have more trouble adjusting to their sets than any other big 12 offense.
sessamoid says: How are OSU’s LBs? How does the pin and pull look against this defense?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: NM Horn, triple option with Gray and Daje as the pitch. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the slip screen to Davis eitherplanobob says: I need a monitor so I can watch the online LHN while reading the chat
Jet Sweep says: Speed kills. Offense knows it. D knows they havent earned their names on the wall yet.
pedronorte says: How is 3rd string QB? Good chance Walsh doesn’t finish the game or misses some plays
btown1110 says: man, we got Coach here too, good stuff guys
pedronorte says: Any chance they get Gray in earlier?
Eric Nahlin says: bKING: I think Jaxon could have a big game but it’s not because the coaches think Mike played great against Ole Miss, let’s get Jaxon the ball. OSU’s corners seem to give free access underneath. Jaxon should find some soft spots between coverages.
jcrogers23 says: For Some Reason I feel this is Kendall Thompson’s coming out party. Anybody else see it?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: bking, I think Jaxon has a big game because he’ll be inthe slot. OSu’s other corners are monsters. Their safeties suck and their thrid corner tore an achiles
jcrogers23 says: Justin Gilbert for OSU is one of their studs.
sessamoid says: So do our outside receiver run lots of middle and deep outs to take the corners away, then let Jaxon do his thing?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: By the way, pay attention to UTexasfootball. Coach, change your font to red
Eric Nahlin says: I have a report coming out on Justin Gilbert tomorrow. I love that kid.
Subversions says: 3rd string is Chelf, and he’s supposed to be pretty good. They have 3 very good QBs.
bKINGfrisB says: when do we see brown, bergeron, and gray in the backfield running the VEER?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: OSU’s strength are its corners and LB’s. I think we’ll attack accordingly to the numbers. They can’t afford to play us with two deep coverage
hopefulhorn says: JS, just read your practice report from the Asset and was intrigued with your comment on Santos getting more snaps. Can you expand on how he might be used in Stillwater?
TXPride says: Eric, loved the piece you posted today regarding the comparisons to the ’08 squad in Lubbock and this game. Been thinking the same. U’ve mentioned several times your concerns for this game. I have to agree.
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Pedro, I think Gray gets some run with Bergeron still dinged.
pedronorte says: It may lead to a faster start
WeAreTexas says: anybody seen killer elite? i just started it
Subversions says: I feel bad for saying it, but that’s exactly why I think Bergeron getting dinged slightly might be a blessing in disguise.
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: pedro, if we get in their bullpen they’re done. Walsh and Lunt are the guys
jmrob93 says: JC any chance Brown starts–I love his style so much better than Bergerons
JasonLong says: Can you elaborate on Jaxson’s injury from last week?
TXPride says: Jesus, is there any concern re: Hicks missing more than just this game, if he does?
Eric Nahlin says: TXPride: Thanks, this game scares me more than any other on the schedule. I think their defense has the potential to turn Texas over. Plus, they have some athletes. While their safeties aren’t great in pass coverage, they’re pretty good against the run.
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: jc, I actually think this will be Josh Turner’s coming out party. I doubt we play 3 linebackers much at all.
40acres4ever says: JS, have you heard any more rumblings concerning stoops and ou?
sessamoid says: I guess we’ll find out just how good their safeties are against the run. They haven’t played anybody yet
pedronorte says: WVU worried me more until I watched them play last week, they remind me of Tech under the Pirate
WeAreTexas says: i really hope the rumors on santos playing ot arent true
WeAreTexas says: that scares me more than anything
Patrick says: tevin jackson scares me
btown1110 says: Santos at OT, WTF are you reading?
sessamoid says: Okie State’s defense is suspect. WV’s defense is just ***ty
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: sess, yeah we’ll have more smash stuff I bet
Jet Sweep says: I get the feeling we will hold on to the ball for quite a while in this one. Then play action will open, they will bite.
pedronorte says: Turner and Cobbs both going home to OK…maybe Cobbs dominates
a0nyme says: Has Fera had a setback recently? What is your best guess as to when Hicks and Fera, respectively, will be healthy enough to play?
sessamoid says: I try not to read too much into OSU’s defensive performance against Arizona. Their DC was out for that game.
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Jason, Jaxon had a slight ankle injury, he’s fine
jcrogers23 says: I thought Josh Turner had the talent. I just wasn’t sure when he would get a significant amount of PT.
jmrob93 says: for the next 3 games–what;s everyones prediction? I will be happy with 2-1 based on this team’s youth–just beat ou
Eric Nahlin says: Going to OK for Turner and Cobbs is infinitely different than Hawkins and Moore returning home. Cobbs is sufficiently motivated. He needs to know his keys, that doesn’t improve with a trip home.
sessamoid says: I don’t know who put together the defensive gameplan against Arizona, but he sucked. Can we knock out the OSU DC?
pedronorte says: Thoughts on Phillips play at Safety so far?btown1110 says: 3-0:@
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: Txpride, yes, Hicks may be out more than just this game if the hip doesn’t respond
UTexasfootball says: watch how we align when we they go strong into the boundary—last year we were badly outflanked
pedronorte says: Santos can blow up some screens
WeAreTexas says: yea but he isnt ready
sessamoid says: Coach, what exactly did we do wrong last yea?
pedronorte says: and make the receiver doubt himself the next time
jcrogers23 says: We are really going to need Hicks against WVU
khaled says: yeah but how does he play in space covering faster WRs
TXPride says: Damn, what a bad stretch to potentially lose Hicks…
MissionsBack2BackChamps says: I think we win this weekend, and it wont eben really be close
UTexasfootball says: numbers work against us when they align a TE into the boundary—we are stuck with both safeties out of quick run support and they pull that OT around on our corner which loses our contain.
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: For whoever asked the Santos question, they were running Santos at the Will and Edmond at the Sam with Turner as the free safety. They had Santo keying on the quick game and blitzing with othe keys. We want to get pressure up the middle, right away
pedronorte says: Cobbs not on the field JS in that scenario?
Jesus Shuttlesworth says: I think Fera plays against WVU. Rose has looked good though
williamboy0330 says: jesus or eric, do you think santos could be one of the best linebackers to come to texas when its all said and done
WeAreTexas says: i really dont like all of the assumed hype with santos the kid is a freshman and hasnt done *** yet
pedronorte says: he has looked explosive at times, even if he is still figuring it out
pedronorte says: remember DJ as a freshman?
Eric Nahlin says: williamboy: Athletically of course, but there’s no way for us to know his aptitude or instincts at this level.
hopefulhorn: Thanks, JS–interesting. Sounds like it is using the front 6 to stuff the run and pressure the passer. My worry would be run fits, particularly on quick hitters out of passing looks to that fast RB of theirs. They burned us last year that way.
UTskyb08: how will SANTOS be in coverage?
williamboy0330: nothing wrong with hype if he can live up to it and id say he has so far
Jesus Shuttlesworth: pedro, yes.
pedronorte: told the other defenders, if you see him go left…everyone else go right…he has left covered
WeAreTexas: he actually blew alot of reads the times he was in
pedronorte: so did Cobbs
WeAreTexas: exactly
pedronorte: he just does it quicker
Jesus Shuttlesworth: pedro, no cobbs there.
TXPride: the last freshman that got me excited based on ST play was Vacarro.
WeAreTexas: i think thompson or jackson should start, or just run nickel the wholetime
Jesus Shuttlesworth: UTexasFootball, why would we have Edmond and Santos in our nickel look against their 3 wide personnel?
pedronorte: has Kevin Vacarro seen the field? or was he a definite shirt?
UTskyb08: i like the thought of running nickel, Turner has looked good.
Jet Sweep: leroy scot and MT will factor in this one…just my uneducated yes.
TXPride: Santos makes kick-offs fun to watch. most of the time
a0nyme: How has the past week and a half gone? Do the coaches feel they’ve corrected or or at least substantially addressed our tackling issues?
Jesus Shuttlesworth: William, I think Santos has great potential
williamboy0330: id like to see tevin jackson in there too seems like like i hear alot of good things out of him
Eric Nahlin: Pedro: Kevin has one tackle on the season.
WeAreTexas: dont forget that the big white guy you see on the KO coverage is often chet mos 13, I know for a fact people ahve had the two confused
williamboy0330: i just think santos is a type of linebacker we havent seen at texas in a long long time or has the potential to be
jmrob93: has anyone noticed nationwide tackling issues–everyone is going for the strip and not concerned with tackling
UTexasfootball: because both are powerful stunters and you can bet the ranch one of them would be coming every down
williamboy0330: i think tackling is out biggest problem overall but its fixable if you want to learn
jcrogers23: Honey Badger started it jmrob93!
Jesus Shuttlesworth: aOnyme, the two coordinators are cocky SOB’s. Yes, they think they’ve got it fixed.
40acres4ever: Mike Gundy is now 45
WeAreTexas: 45!
Subversions: Dang, it’s been 5 years since the rant?
sessamoid: He’s 45! He’s an OLD man! (I’m 45)
WeAreTexas: im a man imalmost 50
IowaHornFan: Is the staff concerned with number of big plays the D has given up or are they chalking it up to the fact they have been extremely vanilla on D?
jmrob93: DJ tackled with one arm and stripped with another
Iz of Texas: Maybe this has been discussed, but how do we feel about the matchups between our interior OL and thier DTs
UTexasfootball: hope—Thompson made few mistakes last week –played well under the circumstances—Santos didn’t have much success reading he’s green still
TXPride: So Eric, if cole luke goes elswhere, do we go hard after Maurice Smith again? Or is he gone for good, regardless?
Jesus Shuttlesworth: For those that missed last week, Coach Harsin cussed a blue streak for Mack to run it up on Ole Miss when they called time out. Mack said, “Calm down Bryan.”
austintransplant: Santos has overpersued and whiffed a couple of times.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: IowaHorn, yeah Manny is concerned, but he’s confident it gets fixed.
Iz of Texas: I was in the stands cussing them for the TO as well. We take a knee and they TO – BS move.
Eric Nahlin: Iz: They have two new DT’s but both supplanted returning starters so they’ve improved there, but so has Texas. That matchup is pretty even, imo. Also, look for the MLB Caleb Lavey to pick up some of their slack. He’s capable if unspectacular.
UTexasfootball: Jesus—gotta believe those two would help destroy the pocket and off the edge they would check the RB’s desire to pass block.
LarryBob: JS, in Harsin’s mind, why was it so important to score at the end of the game like that?
hopefulhorn: Thanks, coach. I like Kendall getting snaps this week too. Thought he played well at Ole Miss. I love Santos’ aggression but green is right.
TXPride: yeah, i thought Timeout by ole miss was strange.
Jet Sweep: im putting the O/U at 10 QBHs
WeAreTexas: to break their back and send a mesage to the nation
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Larry, because he thought they were using time outs so they could get another drive. We took a knee for a reason.
btown1110: I’ll take the over
sessamoid: Harsin sees his job as scoring points. He doesn’t like it when people tell him he can’t do his job.
Iz of Texas: Thanks EN – does that mean we are looking mor to run off tackle/around end than iso/power?
williamboy0330: jesus/eric, do yall think we get through these next 3 games with 3 wins?
WeAreTexas: sure hope
planobob: After the time out, did MS rush hard like the Rutgers now pro coach who tried to cause fumbles?
Jesus Shuttlesworth: william, if we lose a game it will be this one. I think WVU is a paper-tiger and we’ll drop 50 on OU.
Patrick: I was wondering the same thing IZ – OSU bloggers seem concerned about the speed around the edge
Eric Nahlin: Iz: No, Texas will be resilient and try to establish the run up the middle.
williamboy0330: yea jesus it seems like im most worried about this game jw walsh kinda has me nervous cause hes very athletic and the missed tackles could kill us with him
hemicah: Vacarro makes Walsh wish he were dead! book it!
Iz of Texas: Do the Texas coaches think they can take anything away from the OSU erly game tapes? Maybe a little against AZ?
Eric Nahlin: Speed on the edge works better when you’re getting pounded in the A (gap).a0nyme: Best defense: good offense (that never leaves the field).
williamboy0330: i really hope your right micah , vaccaro is vicious
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Iz, Harsin will find something in OSU’s game tape. Keep in mind, we had a horrible 2007 with McCoy, Charles, Ogbannaya, Finley, Hills, Cosby, Shipley, among others as our skill guys. Imagine Harsin with that talent.
Omahorn: Who on here is going to Stillwater?
UTexasfootball: Jesus/Eric—any thought to the Cowboys limiting Walsh on running if the QB1 is out—-Walsh isn’t a sturdy gent and dropping to #3 QB is a long ride home.
Jet Sweep: Unless we have pick-6 going on…I see this game about 28-14 us at the half, they dont come back.
williamboy0330: any new news on marcell harris?
LarryBob: that sheppard kid for OU looks like the real deal. was on same HS team as Barry Sanders Jr
WeAreTexas: yea he does
WeAreTexas: had a great move for a td against ksu
Jesus Shuttlesworth: I don’t see how OSU has a healthy gameplan with a new center who is light in the ass and a frosh QB that has only taken snaps against ULaLa. Unless we turn it over, I think we win
WeAreTexas: finally some optismism from one of the writes
WeAreTexas: blackwell and nahlin got me worried
Eric Nahlin: UTFootball: If OSU struggles to move the ball they’ll run him. To do it not would be a long ride home
BluffviewHorn: Blackwell must be related to Debbie Downer
LarryBob: according to my ou buddy, (who gets his *** from James Hale), they think Sheppard will be another Broyles (minus the gas theft)
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Coach, my guy says we’ll trade yards for hits on the QB when he’s running. A sub-200 pound frosh isn’t sturdy.

hopefulhorn: OU has some offensive skill position talent. Their OL is the issue. IF our DL dominates them like they can that skill talent won’t mean much.
TXPride: think Freshamn Colt against KSU and Aggie
btown1110: Sheppard hasn’t been to Dallas while being on the team, Quandre or Carrington will show him to his rightful place though
Eric Nahlin: Worrying about OU is a waste of time.
IowaHornFan: That confident Eric?
Patrick: You know the OU situation is bad when Switzer is calling out the talent (or lack thereof)
williamboy0330: i love the confidence eric
sessamoid: I’m more worried about this game than OU, too.
UTexasfootball: OU doesn’t have the same type people in the front seven as they are accustomed to playing but Jeffereson is a Sunday player right now.
Omahorn: JS: How does ou’s lack of depth affect their ability to run Jet Tempo those first few drives when they have the ball?
btown1110: How do the D’s of OM and WVU compare?
williamboy0330: eric, any new news on marcell harris
LarryBob: how did they eff up RJ Washington?
TXPride: my biggest concern for OU is emotional letdown and the team coming out flat.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Omahorn, if you watched the KSU game, they only ran it in spots against KSU.
Patrick: Think their DL is bad this year? Wait til next year.
Eric Nahlin: Jefferson was a Sunday player the second he got there. Same with Ronnell Lewis. Some kids you just know.
themicah: any sunday players for the horns in yall opinion?
sessamoid: Predict the Alabama-Ole Miss score this weekend?
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Patrick, exactly. They’re in a world of hurt in 2013.
Eric Nahlin: micah: Of course. Which class though?
IowaHornFan: A win this weekend would be huge going into the big recruiting on the 6th. I am hesitate to get my hopes up, but with a win this weekend all bets are off
BluffviewHorn: OU’s running in the KSU game seem to fade as the game went on. Their OL seemed to where down faster than KSU’s D
crogers23: Bama 24 Ole Miss- 35
Jesus Shuttlesworth: UTexasFootball, what are your thoughts on Ash’s progression.
UTexasfootball: Coach Willie Zap convinced me a long time ago—he called them BLUEEEE chippers for a reason.
btown1110: Mal Brown, you pick, they had it written on them when they walked through the doors of Jester
jcrogers23: haha Not really 38-14 Bama
themicah: outside of okafor, jeffcoat and vaccaro
pedronorte: do you think it would impact the new found JC recruiting if Hawkins were to be a first round pick this year and leave for the NFL after only one year?
UTexasfootball: Jesus—Ash has strong character—it’s important to him and he’s willing to pay the price. I think he’s the best suprise of the season for me
Eric Nahlin: micah: Just NFL guys? OL: Hawkins, Walters, Hopkins and Cochran (Varying rounds). LB: Eh, Hicks. Too early on the others. RB: MB, JB, Gray. WR: Goodwin, Davis and Lil Ship will get looks. DL: Basically the two deep, early on Reed tho.
TXPride: this is going to be another game for Ash where he has to show the fans that the coaches made the right choice btwn him and the opposing qb
Jesus Shuttlesworth: pedro, yeah, Moore and Hawkins may be high draft picks. New sheriffs in town.
Patrick: O/U – Ash 3 TD’s (passing)
pedronorte: They would be ok with the one and done player?
Eric Nahlin: micah: DB: Byndom, Diggs, Vaccaro for sure. Likely Phillips if he improves his tape. Too early on others. TE: Meh. QB: Ash will go high, imo.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Thanks coach. I agree. I love that kid based on what I’ve heard. He’s just as likely to hang out with a manager or team trainer as he is a future NFL star.
crogers23: Patrick: I’m predicting 3 exactly.
LarryBob: who do you take in a street fight? ash vs johnny football?
themicah: nfl stalwart?
sessamoid: What’s your feeling on whether Hawkins goes pro after this year?
pedronorte: does it impact our graduation rates? Seems like it could
themicah: Awesome, what will scouts like about Ash, someone said while he was in highschool said he was Andrew luck light?
btown1110: We can shoulder the load of losing Hawk IMO
pedronorte: looking in the mirror, do we get Jake Matthews if Searles is the O line coach….Searles is earning his paycheck so far
WeAreTexas: we need thor on our side
hopefulhorn: Agree on Ash being a character guy. Saw some tape of him with the press this week and was impressed. He seemed very calm, grounded. His standing up to a rough time last season and coming back this strong says some things about character too.
themicah: I thought Estelle looked nice in his limited time
mack tripper: joined late. any news on RSJ?
btown1110: Yep, Estelle that’s the guy, losing Hawk won’t be a big deal with that kid
sessamoid: tripper, no talk of RSJ. I think that boat has sailed.
Eric Nahlin: Micah: NFL stalwart, Oak, KV and MB. Too early on others. I think JJ will be good too.
Iz of Texas: I missed the answer on AShawn earlier – what’s the deal?
BluffviewHorn: ANy chance we see Daje log more time as a WR? Seems like he would be good fit for the slot
Jesus Shuttlesworth: We’re sitting here sweating how Gundy is going to attack us, but can you imagine their film session? They have virtually zero tape on Harsin’s offense and how he’ll attack with a full compliment of weapons, an experienced QB, and a credible Oline.
UTexasfootball: Hawkins would benefit ffrom one more pass blocking season but his run blocking is top notch—you must psass protect in the show and he isn’t pro standard yet.
pedronorte: I didn’t see it either Iz
Jesus Shuttlesworth: hopefulhorn, great points.
themicah: Malcolm brown is reminiscient of an NFL version of Demarco murray
WeAreTexas: ah yes we need info on ashawn
btown1110: Young is probably pissing himself, but acting like it’s no big deal
sessamoid: Getting Hawkins back for another year would be a huge shot in the arm for our national title hopes in 2013.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Bluffview, we’re going to fedex the ball to Daje if we need to. He’ll get a bunch of touches because he’s probably our best playmaker.
WeAreTexas: jesus/eric infor on ashawn?
LarryBob: so what’s the outlook on j gray this weekend?
Outside Texas: Eric, I thought Benoche was the one so high on good academcis and even thrashed OU once he compare their academics to UT’s. Now he is talking OU for early playing time? So less competition will be more important than academics after all? If so, then good.
BluffviewHorn: That depends on Bludgeron’s health
Iz of Texas: JS/EN (or anyone) – thoughts on TCU so far? Pachall seems to have regressed a bit because of TOs
Jesus Shuttlesworth: I hope Eric tells us about A’shawn being a mamma’s boy. I feel better when he tells that story.
pedronorte: I think he is catering to his audience Outside
Eric Nahlin: Iz and Pedro: Missed the question, I’d be shocked if A’Shawn went far away from home, but Mama isn’t returning my emails. I think he’ll continue to take visits, possibly all five. Can’t see him not feeling right at home when he comes in for Banquet.
WeAreTexas: ok so basically were sweating this one out
Jesus Shuttlesworth: LarryBob, Gray has a chance to get some snaps if Bergeron can’t go. He looked good vs. Ole Miss.
BluffviewHorn: Pachall is suffering from a weak line, and the pressure of playing with a weaker D.
pedronorte: Eric…did comms stop when he took his visit or has she always been hesitant to respond?
btown1110: IMO (strike it from the record if need be) Benenoch is decent, but he’s a depth builder, probably wouldn’t see the field until AT LEAST his RS Jr. year, maybe never
bHero: Wow crowded room. Great participation.
hopefulhorn: Thanks for the reassurance on A’Shawn, Eric. I too was shocked he committed so early.
pedronorte: A few guys from my class took visits to schools they had no interest in just to see a really good game
Iz of Texas: Thanks EN – anything new on Billings? Also, any chance the UT coaches open (or reopen) comms with players that were on visits at Ol MIss that we like? Say one RN?
BluffviewHorn: OL shouldn’t see the field till their RS JR year. Assuming you had the right depth and talent at OL.
pedronorte: hell…you’ve never seen so many football players take visits to Kentucky/Duke the weekend of a big time basketball game
Eric Nahlin: Outside: He never thrashed OU, he said there was give and take at play. He’d be willing to sit and wait if he went to good a academic school, if he goes to OU he wants to play early. His honest implication was OU isn’t a good academic school. It’s not.
williamboy0330: eric/jesus any news on that new wr were talking to… cant remember his name but said to be a big michigan lean
Patrick: Treadwell^
williamboy0330: yea patrick Treadwell
btown1110: Laquon, close though
Eric Nahlin: A’Shawn made his mom a bedazzled UT shirt that she wore proudly at The Opening. Picturing that monster holding a glue gun….The names Coffee, suh, like the drink, imo.
WeAreTexas: uh his first name is ladrius treadwell or something
bHero: What’s the staff’s take on the Asset intel and our ability to tackle a couple of under-rated WRs this weekend?
Outside Texas: Lagoin Treadwell
btown1110: LAQUON
themicah: What is Ash’s upside?
Outside Texas: Quan. Rhymes with Quan.
WeAreTexas: haha
Outside Texas: Quon.
Iz of Texas: We need to tell Laquon to come on down and be Quon II.
Regulator20: Hey Eric when are you heading back to DFW?
pedronorte: Do they feel like they are losing out on Allen out of AZ as well? Do you think if RSJ comes back to them night before Signing day says I want to play for Texas, will they turn him away
pedronorte: seems like he is not in charge of his recruiting
Jesus Shuttlesworth: bhero, he thinks the defense will redeem themselves. But he has to think that.
Eric Nahlin: Pedro: Honestly I’ve never really corresponded with her a whole lot – they’re quiet and private – but she’s responded in the past. I’m not too worried. “Hey kid, look around, you’re the only DT in your class…” is a big sell + close to home.
UTexasfootball: A’Shawn was the closest to a Mike wqilliams player I saw last year—I think he’s the best lineman I’ve seen in a wqhile from the dominating styler of play but he’s raw—he can play on either side of the ball but hope he goes Offense.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: themicah, he’s got a terrific arm and plus athletic ability. If the game continues to slow down he could be better than Colt.
LarryBob: so if there were an early signing period, like mack has wanted, when would it be?
bHero: I’m worried about those guys. We’ll be really spread out and our ability to tackle in space will be more important than it ever has been.hopefulhorn: Ash’s upside: size, athleticism, arm strength, toughness, work ethic–what’s not to like?
Eric Nahlin: Iz: Texas has no chance with Nkemdiche. I’ll have a Billings update in the Scoop. I haven’t had my weekly call with his coach.
bHero: @hopeful horn – decisions under pressure? Ash has been a lot better this year… but what happens the first time he stares at a LEGIT overload.
suuperflie: I guess we’ll find out the first time that happens
Jet Sweep: I have the feeling Ash has seen overload blitz a lot.
Eric Nahlin: micah: 1st round.
BluffviewHorn: I think he sees the best overload he’s going to see all year… in practice
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Jet Sweep, he’s seen plenty. this week in fact.
Jet Sweep: 😉
Eric Nahlin: Regulator: OU weekend.
planobob: pedro. turn in your man card now for sure
hopefulhorn: bHero–good question. These next 3 games will tell us a lot, about Ash as well as the team. I got a good feeling about both. Very 2008 vibe with this group
bHero: @the others… it’s different when the don’t hit you.
Jesus Shuttlesworth: hopeful, 2008 vibe is what i’m feeling
uuperflie: EN/JS, what are the chances we can totally fluster whichever OSU freshman is taking snaps?
Iz of Texas: Re Ash – I thought his best play against OM was bringing the ball back down, scrambling a bit to his left and hitting Davis on the sideline for a 15 yard gain. Thatreally told me somethi.
Outside Texas: Jesus, if ND is keeping USC and SU as two of their three “OOC” rivalries, does that mean Texas will not be getting ND for T-giving since they rotate USC and SU that weekend?
Jet Sweep: Ash’s best throw was down the seam to ship
pedronorte: it was nice to see him hit Davis to between the two defenders on the deep ball in stride
WeAreTexas: i liked the tight window he had to davis last weekend
Iz of Texas: pedro – that too perfect pass.
sessamoid: Iz, that was my favorite ash play from that game as well. That play told me tons about his progression.
BluffviewHorn: The facct we are discussing multiple plays for Ash says a lot.WeAreTexas: i really liked DAvis ability to adjust to the ball and go up and fight for it
suuperflie: I’d still like to see him hit the deep ball in stride
Eric Nahlin: suuper: I don’t think UT fluster JW even if it beats the *** out of him.
pedronorte: I don’t think he can do the underthrows in Big 12 play…safetys will be ready
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Ash had escapes to the left and to the right for completions that were terrific. One to Daje and one to Davis. He’s almost all grows up.
WeAreTexas: most likely
bHero: Ash taking a shot with saftery help on Davis was a legit “wake up” moment for him.
LarryBob: so did JW not look around any? seems he decided early on OSU.
sessamoid: Pedro, the underthrows are specifically against single coverage. I’m sure he’s coached not to do with when safety help is available
Eric Nahlin: LarryBob: He committed early, late Jan or early Feb. of his junior year.
pedronorte: my alcohol induced haze does not allow me to see detailsJet Sweep: it’s known to underthrow in single coverage deep when your WR has his man beat and no underneath help
sessamoid: When Davis was splitting the seam against CB and S, Ash threw a laser.
bHero: yup….
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Eric, not to call you out but what are you basing that on wrt Walsh?
bHero: Pessimistic optimism
LarryBob: EN, i know, must have fallen in love with eskimo joes. seems he could have had a lot of choices.
Eric Nahlin: JS: Talking to people in Denton.
pedronorte: Can we get Brock Huard to do color again, I liked his input
suuperflie: Well damn, that’s what I was counting on…
Jesus Shuttlesworth: As Mike Tyson said, everyone’s got a plan until I punch them in the mouth.
pedronorte: lol
Outside Texas: or bite them in the ear
bHero: lol.. that’s a murphy law of combat
Jet Sweep: someone on our D would bite an ear
hopefulhorn: Saw a bit of Walsh playing for Guyer. Thought he had that coach’s son head and toughness as well as physical tools.
bHero: few batlle plans suvive the first shot fired
pedronorte: or as a marine says, “be nice to everyone you meet, but have a plan to kill them just in case”
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Guys, we’re about to wrap up (hopefully the Horns do too), but if there’s anything else we can do to make the site better. Let us know.
Eric Nahlin: JS: No doubt, but he’s not going to quit. He might throw a pick or two for sure. I guess it depends on the definition of flustered.
