HUMBLE -- Finding an offensive tackle with upside and potential is exactly what Tom Herman and Texas wanted in this transition class. So they got Sam Cosmi.
The Humble Atascocita 3-star committed to the Longhorns today, one day after his official visit weekend in Austin.
He was formerly pledged to the University of Houston, while Herman led the Cougars. He held offers from TCU, Memphis, and UH among the group.
At 6-foot-5, 265, Cosmi is 2nd offensive lineman in the C/O 2017 for Texas, joining SA Reagan's Derek Kerstetter.
Recruiting Notebook Evaluation:
How he fits at Texas: As you would hope from a kid that's tackle height but still at DE weight, Cosmi is very light on his feet. I even wonder if he was just part of the year because there were games last year where he exploded into defensive backfields and picked off LBs. He'd need to spend some quality time with McKnight but Cosmi has the athleticism and feet to play outside at tackle but also a nice ability to get low and drive people that could see him bump inside of tackle didn't work out or he just couldn't beat out the other numerous athletes Texas has been stockpiling at the position. - Ian Boyd
Coach says: My first watch of this kid left me pretty underwhelmed, but I gave him him a second look to see if I still felt the same. After watching him a second time it wasn't underwhelming as I remembered, but in my opinion he is going to be another project like the Zabie kid, but I'm not sure his ceiling is higher. He moves well, but he is also pretty light in the britches and is going to need to add some serious weight because he is probably around 250 pounds right now. On top of that he is going to need to get much stronger in the weight room as there isn't much finishing to speak of on his film, which is worrisome to me. Doesn't come from the lack of trying or effort, he's just not strong enough yet. This is another case of where your offensive line coach better be worth his salt because I'm a little skittish of this take all things considered.
Cosmi is the 16th member of UT’s Class of 2017.
