The On3 Personal Life File: Aaliyah Chavez remembers when she first fell in love with basketball. When she was younger, she’d mostly sit at home and watch television or watch other kids playing basketball at the park. That’s when she got her hoop dreams. “I was like, ‘Oh, that looks fun to play,” Chavez told SLAM. Her father, Sonny, said it took a while for Chavez to develop because she “couldn’t ride a bike, couldn’t ride a skateboard.” But she would eventually figure things out and turn into one of the most dominating players in Texas high school basketball history. After the 2023-2024 season, Chavez was named the Texas Girls’ Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year. It was a season where she broke school records for points in a season, points in a career and most 3-pointers in a game. She also shattered the school record with 57 points in a game. “She’s an elite basketball player known for her exceptional skills and undeniable talent on the court, with a passion for the game and drive to succeed. Aaliyah has made a name for herself in the world of basketball,” Lubbock ISD Director of Athletics Mike Meeks said. “With an unwavering dedication to her craft and relentless work ethic, Aaliyah continues to impress fans and critics alike with her incredible talent and skill on the court. Keep an eye on this rising star as she continues to make waves in the basketball world.”
