Derrick Johnson to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night
Longhorn legend Derrick Johnson, one of the best defenders in Texas football history, will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame during the National Football Foundation’s awards dinner on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. Central. The dinner will air on ESPN+.

Johnson earned consensus first-team All-America honors in 2003 and 2004, one of a elite few to do so in burnt orange. In 2004 as a senior, he won the Nagurski Trophy (given to the nation’s top defensive player) and the Butkus Award (given to the nation’s top linebacker). He earned Big 12 defensive player of the year honors in 2004 for his efforts as part of Texas’ 11-1 record and 38-37 victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl. He was also the 2004 Big 12 male athlete of the year.
Johnson played in 50 games at Texas with 40 starts. He recorded 458 career tackles, 65 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, 39 pressures, 30 PBUs, nine interceptions, 11 forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries. As a senior in 2004, he forced an NCAA record nine fumbles.
He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 15th overall pick in 2005. During his 14 year NFL career, Johnson earned Pro Bowl honors four times and was an All-Pro in 2011. He had 1171 career tackles, 103 tackles for loss, 27.5 sacks, 14 interceptions, and 22 forced fumbles during his time with the Chiefs and Raiders.

Johnson lives in Austin where he is the director of the Defend the Dream Foundation.
Twenty-two Longhorns have now earned a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame including Hub Bechtol, Earl Campbell, Doug English, Chris Gilbert, Jerry Gray, Johnnie Johnson, Malcolm Kutner, Bobby Layne, Roosevelt Leaks, Bud McFadin, Bob McKay, Steve McMichael, Tommy Nobis, James Saxton, Harley Sewell, Kenneth Sims, Jerry Sisemore, Bud Sprague, Harrison Stafford, Ricky Williams, and Vince Young. Coaches Dana Bible, Mack Brown, and Darrell Royal have been inducted.
This year’s hall of fame class includes Eric Berry, Michael Bishop, Reggie Bush, Dwight Freeney, Robert Gallery, LaMichael James, Bill Kollar, Luke Kuechly, Jeremy Maclin, Terance Mathis, Bryant McKinnie, Corey Moore, Michael Stonebreaker, Tim Tebow, Troy Vincent, Brian Westbrook, DeAngelo Williams, Monte Cater, Paul Johnson, Roy Kramer, and Mark Richt.
