The 6-foot-8 athletic forward entered the 2023 NBA Draft April 12, and has been considered a player that could be taken in the second round of the draft. After working out for a number of teams and taking part in the NBA Draft Combine, Mitchell and his family made the decision that a second year in college would be beneficial for his future draft stock.

Mitchell signed with Texas as a five-star prospect in the class of 2023. His high-end athletic ability showed up at various times throughout the Longhorns’ run to the Elite Eight. While he wasn’t afforded many offensive opportunities on a team with a number of experienced players that were scoring threats, he was productive when on the court for more than 20 minutes in games.

In 16 games in which Mitchell logged 20 minutes or more, the Sunshine state native averaged 6.6 points and 5.3 rebounds. Those numbers include seven games in Big 12 where he played 20 minutes or more. His average in those seven games was 4.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.

Mitchell totaled six double-figure scoring games as a freshman, including one double-double.

The return of Mitchell is great news for Rodney Terry and staff. Mitchell will be the final forward for the Longhorns on the 2023-24 roster. The Longhorns roster now includes five players off last season’s Elite Eight squad. Oral Roberts transfer guard Max Abmas provides the Longhorns with a sixth player that been part of a Sweet 16 team.

The Longhorns plan to add a fourth guard to the roster for sure in order to build a ten-man rotation. That will likely come via a graduate transfer in the portal, or one that goes into the portal.
