Eagles chooses Texas

Just a week after landing one of the state's elite pass catchers, Tom Herman and Texas landed another one.
Alief Taylor wide receiver Brennan Eagles committed to Texas today. Eagles, committed to the Longhorns over competing offers from Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, and Oklahoma, among others.

How he fits at Texas: Eagles is a legit 4.4 guy at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, which makes him pretty scary for Big 12 teams trying to find ways to match up with all the brilliantly athletic WRs in the league. He'll need to learn how to run more complicated routes and set up corners so that he can use that speed to blow by them. I don't really see him being a chain mover for Texas without a lot of development, he seems more a guy that needs to be good at winning deep on fades and post routes as an alert/clear out option or a play-action target. He's pretty raw at this point but with skill development in his route running that size and speed ratio is going be really hard to beat. - IB
Coach says: When you are a wide receiver and you measure in just under 6’4 and tick under 215 pounds then proceed to run 4.51 on a cold day and a slow surface, you are what I call a creature. Last year Tyrell Shavers blew up the regional in Dallas, and this year Eagles did the exact same thing. Eagles also showed off his explosiveness with a 37-inch vertical and threw down a 3.99 shuttle time. The kid earned every bit of that invite to Oregon and I was already a fan of his prior to this athletic display down in Houston. This dude is a future mismatch nightmare in someone’s offense, and it won’t surprise me if just about every FBS school comes calling by the time he signs.
How this affects Texas: At 6-foot-4, 200+ pounds, his performance at the Opening Regional in Houston opened the nation's eyes. We knew he was talented, but that performance surprised some. After taking only two WRs in 2017, and losing four after this next season, I could see the staff try to lock up 3-4. Thankfully, even though it's not on par with 2017, the state's still has plenty of pass-catching talent in the next grouping. The best part; Eagles likes UT. He liked the previous UH, current Texas staff. When he drops a Top 5, you can expect the Horns to be on that list. - JW
