It’s the first Final Four for the program since 2003, and joins the 1986 and 1987 seasons for program appearances in the national semifinals. Texas will look to win its first national championship since 1986 in Tampa and the second title in program history.
Schaefer reaches the Final Four for the first time as head coach of the Longhorns and the third time in his career, joining appearances at Mississippi State in 2017 and 2018.
Schaefer has led the Longhorns to the Elite Eight in four of his five seasons, but could not break past the regional final for a number of reasons. On a team led by superstars Madison Booker and Rori Harmon, plus Taylor Jones, Kyla Oldacre, and Shay Holle, the Longhorns are now 35-3 and will compete on the grandest stage of women’s college basketball for the first time in over two decades.

Texas moved past William & Mary, Illinois, Tennessee, and TCU to reach the Elite Eight. Thanks to the typical stifling defense from a Schaefer team that shutdown TCU’s stars in Hailey Van Lith, Sedona Prince, and Madison Conner, the Longhorns were able to limit the Horned Frogs to just 47 points on 12 of 45 shooting. Plus, the Longhorns got typical double-digit scoring contributions from Booker and Harmon but also a nine-point effort from Oldacre.
