Johnson, who also considered Louisville and N.C. State during the process, also signed his letter of intent on November 15 prior to make a public announcement.

Johnson made an official visit to Texas the September 10th weekend around the Longhorn football game against Alabama.

Johnson made the visit with “big brother” and Houston Rockets star guard Jalen Green plus his trainer and mentor Mike Hill. The visit was the second for Johnson following a June unofficial visit.

Texas associate head coach Rodney Terry ran point on the recruitment. Terry has a longstanding relationship with Hill, Green and people close to Johnson in Fresno from his days as head coach at Fresno State. Terry, head coach Chris Beard and assistant Bob Donewald Jr. all played a role in the recruitment, and official visit in September.

Johnson, the No. 16 overall prospect in the 2023 On3 Consensus, becomes the second commitment for Texas in the class. Forward Ron Holland, the No. 13 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus, committed to Texas November 5 over Arkansas and UCLA. Johnson and Holland played together for USA Basketball in Los Angeles in October.

A.J. Johnson On3 Scouting Summary

AJ Johnson is a jet-fast point guard with elite end-to-end speed. He has great length and good size as a lead guard. Johnson will need to add weight; he is very skinny at this point. But his burst and explosion get him to his spots. Johnson is decisive getting downhill, using his dribble to attack the paint. Johnson has upside on defense with his length and quick twitch. The pull-up jump shot is a weapon in the mid-range. He is an above-average shooter that could continue to tighten. His natural tools are impressive, and as he continues to add weight, his ceiling is as high as any player in the 2023 class.
