It took surviving a second-half scare, but the Texas Longhorns advanced to the championship game of the Legends Classic with a 70-66 win over the Syracuse Orange on Thursday night.

Arthur Kaluma and Tre Johnson led all scorers with 16 points apiece. Kaluma pulled down 10 rebounds and dished four assists while utilizing all five fouls in one of the best performances by a Longhorn not named Johnson of the young season. Johnson wasn’t his dynamic self but he still made his way to the line and reached double figures. Chendall Weaver added 10 points and nine rebounds, also notching two steals and one block as he made critical play after critical play down the stretch.

Texas could have matched up with Texas Tech in the final of the early-season multi-team event. However, the Red Raiders could not hold up their end of the bargain and the Longhorns will instead face St. Joseph’s from the Atlantic 10.

The one-day turnaround gives Rodney Terry and company a taste of what conference tournament life will be like come March, and provides another quality opponent for a Longhorns resume that lacks many major tests ahead of SEC play.

Friday’s matchup between the Longhorns and the Hawks is the fifth meeting all time between the two teams. Texas leads the series 4-0. The two teams last met on November 24, 2008 in the Maui Invitational when Texas on 68-50.
