The first national signing period for college football runs from December 21-23. That puts it a week later than normal, which allows you even more time to familiarize yourself with the next class charged with helping restore Texas back to national prominence.
The preceding 2022 class is already off to a good start, but the way to win at a consistently high level is to stack talented class after talented class. At all times you need young players developing, creating competition, and providing valuable depth before becoming quality starters.
The top 5 contending 2023 class is just what Texas needed after the top 5 2022 class.
In the lead-up to NSD1, Inside Texas will offer profiles of each member of the 2023 signing class.
Next up, Malik Muhammad.
The Player: Malik Muhammad, CB, Desoto (Texas), 6-foot, 180 pounds
The Rating: 96.06, On3 Consensus four-star
The Ranking:
The Recruitment: After he returned from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. during his junior year, Muhammad’s offer sheet started growing. Notre Dame was the favorite for the longest time. He had a great relationship with Brian Kelly’s staff, But then he began trending away from the Fighting Irish after cancelling multiple trips. Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, and Michigan began to pursue even harder, and after flirting with the idea of leaving state, he made the call to the Horns over the summer. Alabama and Texas A&M continued to recruit the On3 four-star, but Muhammad stayed loyal and will now enroll at Texas in the first week in January.
The Projection: This one’s easy. He’s a cornerback. With his size and length, he’s basically your prototypical man on the island. He glides in space, shifts his hips fluidly, and closes strong. He’s also incredibly smart and reads his keys like a professional. Muhammad could play a number of spots in the secondary, but you don’t mess with a pure corner.

The Reasoning: “The school, the coaches, the football, all of the above, really.” – Malik Muhammad
The Relationship: “I really have a great relationship with all the (Texas) staff. I’m really close to Byron Murphy, from the city. The coaches came through strong, and the players did as well.” – Muhammad
The Education: International business.
The Final Word: Texas needed a lockdown corner in the worst way in the Class of 2023. After programs across the country courted On3’s No. 4 corner in the nation, Texas stayed consistent. With high school teammate Billy Walton joining the mix, it became a family affair in Austin. Muhammad is enrolling early and looking to play as a true freshman in 2023. He’ll instantly inject pure talent and skill at one of the most important positions on the field.
