The first national signing period for college football runs from December 21-23. That puts it a week later than normal, which allows you even more time to familiarize yourself with the next class charged with helping restore Texas back to national prominence.

The preceding 2022 class is already off to a good start, but the way to win at a consistently high level is to stack talented class after talented class. At all times you need young players developing, creating competition, and providing valuable depth before becoming quality starters.

The top 5 contending 2023 class is just what Texas needed after the top 5 2022 class.

In the lead-up to NSD1, Inside Texas will offer profiles of each member of the 2023 signing class.

Next up, Spencer Shannon.

The Player: Spencer Shannon, TE, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, 6-foot-7, 230 pounds

The Rating: 87.55, On3 Consensus three-star

The Ranking:

The Recruitment: Shannon was only on Pac 12 radars when he met Jeff Banks and the Longhorn staff. UCLA, Washington, and Cal were on him early in his recruitment, but after Shannon was offered by Texas and took his first trip to Austin, he knew then exactly where he belonged. Shannon committed shortly after and hasn’t looked at another school since.

The Projection: Shannon entered high school as a baseball prospect with football being an afterthought. After his freshman season, he began to really enjoy the gridiron. He decided to give up baseball, something he’d played his entire life, to focus on football and earn a D1 scholarship. At 6-foot-7, 230 pounds, he became a strong tight end, good blocker, and has the perfect disposition for the sport. Shannon has good hands and can work in-line or flexed out at the position.

The Reasoning: “I chose Texas because for me, it is the perfect fit.  UT is a place where I can achieve all of my goals both on the field and in the classroom. I believe in what Coach Sarkisian is building on the field and I am excited to be a part of Texas’ return to the top. I love Coach Banks’ energy and direct approach.” – Spencer Shannon

The Relationship: “I believe Coach Banks and Coach Bimonte will help me develop to my full potential.  I also love the state of Texas and how much football means to the people of Texas.  DKR is electric on Saturdays. And, I have family in Texas.” – Shannon

The Education: “Some form of business.” – Shannon

The Final Word: Texas wanted 2-3 tight ends in the 2023 cycle. Shannon was the first to jump in the boat, with New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman three-star Will Randle joining shortly after. Texas and Jeff Banks are stocking the cupboard with tight ends while showing the country how to utilize them with Ja’Tavion Sanders’ All Big 12 season.
