The first national signing period for college football runs from December 21-23. That puts it a week later than normal, which allows you even more time to familiarize yourself with the next class charged with helping restore Texas back to national prominence.
The preceding 2022 class is already off to a good start, but the way to win at a consistently high level is to stack talented class after talented class. At all times you need young players developing, creating competition, and providing valuable depth before becoming quality starters.
The top 5 contending 2023 class is just what Texas needed after the top 5 2022 class.
In the lead-up to NSD1, Inside Texas will offer profiles of each member of the 2023 signing class.
Next up, Tre Wisner.
The Player: Tre Wisner, RB, Desoto (Texas), 5-foot-11, 185 pounds
The Rating: 87.88, On3 Consensus three-star
The Ranking:
The Recruitment: Early on in Wisner’s recruitment, he seemed Oklahoma bound. Despite an early offer from Texas, that relationship with Stan Drayton and company was never built. Enter Tashard Choice. When Texas hired him as the new running backs coach, this recruitment went 180. Wisner began getting closer to Choice and the Texas staff, including attending the spring game in late April. That night, he committed to the Longhorns. Wisner stated that his bond with Choice was ultimately the deciding factor. Once he moved to Desoto and hung out with Texas pledge Johntay Cook, it was orange house from that point.
The Projection: His skill set is such that he can play a number of positions on offense. At Desoto, he was the running back and slot receiver for the 6A DII state champions, adding a 54-yard touchdown catch that put Austin Vandegrift down for the count. He’ll play tailback in Austin, but like Steve Sarkisian often does, you might see him flexed out at receiver to get the ball in his hands in space. His exploits on the hardwood and track are also well known.

The Reasoning: “I just love the way Texas uses their running backs. It’s like here (Desoto), using me at running back, the screen game, inside zone, outside zone, that’s really what it’s all about. We’re building something big in Austin.” – Tre Wisner
The Relationship: “(Coach Choice) hit me up before the game. Told me to ‘go out there and do it like we do it.’ That realtionship with Coach Choice is very strong and why I ultimately picked Texas.” – Wisner
The Education: Business entrepreneurship.
The Final Word: Texas wanted two running backs in the Class of 2023. When Wisner jumped in the boat, it gave Choice and the Texas staff the time to focus on the nation’s No. 1 tailback, Cedric Baxter. Both backs have incredible upside and play with chips on their shoulders. Wisner wanted to take a few of his official visits over the last few months, but each time he spoke to Choice, he changed his mind. Now, he’s set to enroll in Austin the first week in June.
