How Shaw Fits at Texas
Role in the Defensive Line Rotation
Shaw will step into the middle of Texas’ defense and excel as a run-stopper. In critical situations such as short-yardage and goal-line plays, similar to Bill Norton this year, Shaw’s physical presence will give the Longhorns a significant presence dedicated to controlling the line of scrimmage and preventing opposing offenses from getting to the second level.
Depth and Durability
Just like Cole Brevard, the transfer from Purdue who also adds size and depth to Texas’ defensive line going into 2025, Shaw strengthens the Longhorns’ interior rotation going into next season. His addition provides another body in the trenches, ensuring the unit can continue to rotate during games and remain fresh and effective throughout the grind of an SEC schedule. Shaw’s ability to hold his ground and take on double teams will be essential against the offensive lines Texas will face week in and week out will be a plus whether he’s a starter or a depth piece.

Impact in the SEC
The SEC is a conference where controlling the trenches is key, and Shaw’s size and skill set make him a perfect fit and a player who won’t look out of place. His ability to absorb blockers will make it difficult for opposing offenses to establish their running game if the Longhorns sub off their main defensive tackles. Shaw’s presence will be critical in neutralizing power-run schemes, forcing offenses to adjust their strategy, and helping Texas’ defense gain the upper hand.
Complementary Fit
Shaw’s skill set complements the current defensive line rotation perfectly. Alongside players like Cole Brevard, Alex January, Melvin Hills, some talented 2025 signees set to join, and two more likely portal additions, his presence ensures Texas has a group that can adapt to different offensive schemes. Shaw provides the muscle to help anchor the Longhorns’ defense.

Final Thoughts
Shaw gives the Longhorns an experienced player in a position of need. With his size and strength, and being a one-year rental type player going into a contract year with something to prove for himself, this was a good fit for both sides.
