Have the Longhorns Locked Up a National Seed?

The 2025 Texas Longhorns have soared above the national expectations from the preseason polls. Sitting at 39-8 overall and 19-5 in the first year of SEC conference play, the Longhorns are looking like a true national seed in college baseball.

The preseason polls for Texas early on were not that bullish on the Horns. Texas was thought to be a fringe hosting team with a strong SEC schedule staring them in the eyes. The only service that was really close was the Perfect Game poll who was a notable exception to the early polls not being so bullish.

The resume that this Texas team has pieced together is quite strong. Even the non-conference record of 20-3 stands out. Only the Texas State loss really stinks among those three games lost given the Bobcats are 24-24 and won’t even sniff the post season, barring a Sun Belt Conference Tournament miracle
The other two non-conference losses Texas has are to teams that Caleb Connelly from College Baseball Central has ranked in the top 30 of the projected field of 64. UTSA and Louisville are projected by Connelly to be #2 seeds. The way Texas lost those games will also look in the Horns’ favor with both of the games being one run losses in extra innings.

When you look at the conference schedule it is quite strong given the teams that are projected as national seeds. Two of the teams Texas has lost conference games to are in the top five of his projections. Kentucky, who has one win over Texas, is in the last four in.

The question at this point is, does Texas want to be the #1 seed in the tournament? It’s a legitimate question due the fact that Tennessee was only the second team in the super regional format to win the national championship from that post, the other being Miami in 1999.
For Texas, however, it’s one it may have to soon answer.
