After two seasons on the 40 Acres, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is coming back for one more. Ewers, a third-year sophomore who transferred to Texas from Ohio State ahead of the 2022 season, announced he will return to the Longhorn football program for his third season in Austin in 2024.

His decision to return means Texas will have a third-year starter under center as the Longhorns enter their first season as members of the SEC in 2024. It allows for Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian to deploy an experienced player in his fourth year of college football at the position he calls the most important in sports. It likely means Arch Manning, who pushed back against the notion of transferring when available to the media in the leadup to the Sugar Bowl, will be Ewers’ backup for his redshirt freshman campaign.

Ewers was 272-for-394 for 3479 yards and 22 touchdowns over six interceptions during the 2023 season. He also rushed 59 times gaining 75 yards and scoring five touchdowns. Ewers missed just over two games of action when he was knocked out of the Longhorns’ win over Houston and was sidelined for games against BYU and Kansas State. Maalik Murphy, who has since announced his decision to transfer to Duke, stood in for Ewers during those games.

During Texas’ loss in the College Football Playoff semifinal to Washington, Ewers was 24-for-43 for 318 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed eight times for 54 yards.

Ewers played in 10 of Texas’ 12 games in 2022, completing 172-of-296 passes for 2177 yards. He threw 15 touchdowns, six interceptions, and rushed for one more in the regular season finale versus Baylor.

A one-time Texas commit in the Longhorns’ class of 2022, decommitted from Texas in the fall of 2020 and committed to Ohio State weeks later. He eventually reclassified to the 2021 class in order to take advantage of NIL opportunities available only to college football players.

Ewers was buried on the Buckeye depth chart, seeing a handful of snaps during his freshman season in Columbus.
